AbstractMorphometric, hydrophysical and trophic criteria of 66 storage reservoirs with different trophic levels were related to each other on order to get generalizable statements for describing the quality of storage reservoirs and to make predictions for planned storage reservoirs possible. Model setups which are known from literature are compared with measured values from practice, and the results are represented as tables and graphs.

AbstractSea entered pollutions, in particular oil and oil products, interact complexly with marine biota. On the one hand, oil causes disfunction of marine communities, death of some marine representatives and sometimes of the whole community. On the other hand, marine organisms and their communities transform pollutions during purification processes improving marine environment quality. AbstractFor the shallow lake there can be expected eutrophic conditions according to its morphometric data (z̄ 2.8 m,l1.1… 1.8a), even mesotrophic conditions acc. to the catchment area (2.8 km2/hm3, 8 km2/km2, 20% wood) and eutrophic conditions acc. to load (1,340 Population Equivalents/hm3, 0.027… 0.386 g/m2a P). The actually measured data of oxygen balance, nutrient contents and bioproduction show a eutrophic situation with a trend towards polytrophy. The difference to the expectation values can be explained by an underestimation of direct loading from a duck farm and the back‐wash waters of a waterworks, so that sanitation measures for reducing the direct loading are promising. The relocation of the duck farm and of a large complex of stables as well as the introduction of extensive fishery utilization with a balanced stock of predatory fish resulted in perceptible trends of oligotrophication already after two years, especially by a remarkable promotion of the macrophyte stocks in the shallow wate

AbstractPistia stratiotesL. obtained from a eutrophic lake in Ibadan, Nigeria was examined for its mineral and trace element composition. The study indicated that the shoot system accumulated more potassium, calcium and magnesium, whereas the root system accumulated significantly more cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, sodium and zinc. The possible utilization of this aquatic plant for the treatment of polluted waters and industrial effluents is discussed.

AbstractThe paper studies the effect of the solids retention time (SRT) on the rate of biodegradation of morpholine (M), sulfanilic acid (SA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in laboratory mixed culture systems, fed semicontinuously on a once‐a‐day feeding schedule. It has been found that the minimum values of SRT at which microorganisms degrading the above compounds were washed out from the cultivation systems were 3, 1, 1, and 20 days for M, SA, NTA, and EDTA systems, respectively. A critical value of SRT was defined as that below which the rate of substrate removal is lower than the rate of substrate application into the system. The critical values of SRT were found to be 8, 3, 2.5, and above 20 days for M, SA, NTA, and EDTA systems, respectively. In a range between the minimum and critical values of SRT the mixed culture system cannot give stable efficiency of a given compound removal and the effluent concentration can be expected to vary considerably. AbstractIn the present investigation the effect of water‐borne copper on the gill architecture of a freshwater teleost,Heteropneustes fossilis(BLOCH) was studied through scanning electron microscopy. The changes produced on the gill surface in a sublethal measured copper concentration (8.17 mg/1) in static bioassay after 96 h of exposure were fusion of secondary lamellae, rupture of various cellular components and deposition of excessive mucus and blood on the gill surface. The epithelial surface of treated gill thus lost the organized structures like microvilli, arborizing ridges and channels.
