AbstractThe effect in mice of 8 subcutaneous injections of 20 μg of L‐thyroxine at 12 hr‐intervals on the carnitine concentration in the heart and skeletal muscle tissue was studied. In skeletal muscle tissue, the thyroxine treatment resulted in a depressed carnitine concentration. The mean values were 1.59 ± 0.034(S.E.M.) and 2.03 ± 0.046 μmol/g noncollagen protein and 1.11 ± 0.035 and 1.45 ± 0.037 μmol/g dry weight for the thyroxine treated and the control animals, respectively. Thyroxine produced myocardial hypertrophy. The thyroxine treated animals had lower cardiac values when dry weight was used as reference base, 4.17 ± 0.10 μmol/g dry weight than the control group, 4.69 ± 0.18 μmol/g dry weight. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups when the cardiac carnitine concentration was expressed per g noncollagen protein or as carnitine content in the entire hearts. AbstractThe effects of cortisol on components of the liver microsomal mixed function oxidase system (MFO) of immature and starved rainbow trout,Salmo gairdnerii, Rich., were studied 3, 7 and 21 days after intraperitoneal implantation of cortisol‐containing cholesterol pellets. The treatment resulted in significantly elevated NADPH cytochrome c reductase activities, concomitant with elevated plasma cortisol levels, at all sampling events, while no significant effects on either liver cytochrome P‐450 or microsomal protein contents was observed. AbstractContinence of urine requires ability of the bladder to maintain a low intravesical pressure at increasing filling, in order to preserve a positive urethral‐bladder pressure gradient. During micturition the conditions are reversed: the bladder has to generate pressures exceeding the urethral pressure, which also presupposes that the urethra opens and remains open as long as is required for all urine to be expelled. These events are made possible by a complicated pattern of central and peripheral neural responses, affecting the bladder‐urethral unit. The pioneer work of determining the reflex mechanisms involved in the regulation of the lower urinary tract was done at the beginning of this century. Recently, further studies have been made and by means of electrophysiological investigations previous data have been confirmed. AbstractThe adrenergic innervation of the feline and human urinary bladder was studied with the histochemical fluorescence method of Hillarp and Falck. In the normal bladder of both species the trigone area was densely innervated by thick and strongly green‐fluorescent adrenergic terminals while the detrusor muscle contained a sparse innervation of very thin and weakly fluorescent nerve terminals.After parasympathetic denervation (lower motor neuron lesion in patients) the adrenergic innervation of the detrusor muscle was altered. In the cat, the first signs of altered adrenergic innervation were observed 6 weeks after parasympathetic denervation, when thick, strongly fluorescent adrenergic fibres appeared between and in the smooth muscle bundles. These fibres had the characteristics of growth cones and indicated an outgrowth of new adrenergic fibres into the detrusor muscle. Later on, the muscle bundles were densely innervated by thick and strongly fluorescent terminals, reminiscent of trigone terminals. In the patients with lower motor neuron lesions, thick, strongly fluorescent adrenergic terminals were seen in the detrusor. AbstractThe effect of beta‐adrenoceptor stimulation on the volume of the urinary bladder in 16 neurologically normal humans without symptoms of micturition disturbances was investigated. Terbutaline, a selective beta2‐adrenoceptor stimulating agent, was tested in 9 persons and isoprenaline, a general beta‐adrenoceptor stimulating agent, was tested in 7 persons. After terbutaline the maximum increase in the bladder volume was 10% and on an average around 5%. After isoprenaline the maximum increase in the bladder volume was 15% and on an average around 5%. Terbutaline as well as isoprenaline administration resulted in tachycardia and an increased pulse pressure. The tachycardia was somewhat more marked after isoprenaline. In conclusion, only a small increase in the volume of the urinary bladder was noted after beta‐adrenoceptor stimulation in neurologically normal humans without symptoms of micturition disturbances, in contrast to effects achieved in some patients with urgency. AbstractThe myocardial blood flow was measured by the133Xenon disappearance curve from the left ventricular wall following an injection of133Xenon in the left coronary artery in 8 dogs without digoxin pretreatment and in 8 chronically digitalized dogs. The myocardial blood flow was significantly less (30%) in the digitalized dogs than in the dogs without pretreatment. In the digitalized dogs as well as in those without pretreatment an intravenous injection of digoxin resulted in a further significant decrease of the myocardial blood flow of about 20% and a significant increase of the coronary vascular resistance. The reduced myocardial blood flow both during acute and chronic digitalization is believed to be of clinical importance.
