摘要:
A theory of design of blankets for dams on pervious foundations is presented. Rules for optimal design of rectangular and triangular blankets are formulated. Analysis is given for trapezoidal blankets also. Only the blankets on the upstream side of the dams are considered because the downstream blankets are not effective in reducing the uplift force. They will need to be made much stronger than the upstream blankets in order to withstand the unbalanced uplift force. Usually on the downstream side, drainage holes are provided to relieve the uplift pressure.

摘要:
This paper presents a calibration chart for the Preston tube for the measurement of shear stress on smooth as well as approximately uniformly rough boundaries. The analytically developed calibration curves have been compared with the authors' experimental observations on sand-paper and hemispherical roughnesses and other existing data in the literature.

摘要:
The theory of the diffraction of water-waves has previously been limited to twosimple cases; the diffraction around a semi-finite breakwater and the diffractionthrough an opening in a rigid plane. Another useful practical configuration consideredhere is two breakwaters at an angle, with a gap at the corner in one ofthe breakwaters. The parameters are the angle, the breadth of the gap and theangle of incidence of the wave train. The waves are assumed to be of small amplitude.Numerical results agree well with the classical solution for the case wherethe two breakwaters lie in the same plane. Experiments with two sets of parametershave been made in a tank and have also shown good agreement with the theory.
