摘要:
A theory which incorporates a surface spectrum of water waves is developed in such a way that direct computation and comparison with experiment is possible. Three theories are developed, one which applies to inviscid waves, one which applies to waves dominated by viscous conduction, and one which applies to waves dominated by viscous convection. It is found that the steady second-order streaming at the free surface increases by 20% if a sinusoidal wave is replaced by a Gaussian spectrum of standard deviation 4 radians per second of the same total energy.

摘要:
The influence of wave steepness on force coefficient for large square and rectangular section caissons has been studied experimentally and compared with the results obtained using the modified linear diffraction theory proposed by Mogridge and Jamieson. The square caisson was tested for orientations of 0°, 15°, 30° and 45° of its side with the wave front and the rectangular caisson was tested for two aspect ratios of 3/4 and 4/3 for normal incidence of waves on its side.

摘要:
Results of experiments of friction losses in conduits with large roughnessformed by spheres and hemispheres in different concentrations are used as abasis for the determination of the reference datum. This enables the computationof the friction loss for this type of roughness without further experimentalwork. A mathematical model for the computation of friction coefficient, applicableto conduits with roughness elements of any shape and based on the coefficientof drag, is presented. The model has been successfully tested by experimentsin channels both with uniform and with random roughness size and shapeincluding experiments with natural river stones up to 150 mm high.

摘要:
Lines of hydrogen bubbles generated by electrolysis from a fine wire may be usedto visualise and quantify velocity fields in low velocity flow. Because thebubbles are released into the wake of the generating wire their velocity differsfrom that of the free stream. As the velocity deficit can amount to twentypercent of the free stream velocity at a distance of one hundred diameters fromthe wire, the wake effect cannot be ignored in quantative work. This paperexamines the influence of wire orientation, wire Reynolds number, bubble pulseduration and rate of bubble production on the velocity defect experienced bythe bubbles.
