A considerable body of experimental evidence has accumulated that suggests that the circulations generated in numerical models of free-surface Hows that are two-dimensional in plan may be realistic physically even though none ofthe numerical experiments described in the literature have explicitely utilized realistic lateral shear stresses. On the other hand, it is easily shown by analytical means that not only is it impossible to generate realistic circulations without the introduction of correspondingly realistic shear stresses but that, in the absence of such shear stresses, no circulation at all should have arisen in the experiments described. The first part ofthe study is given over to a review ofthe evidence already available both for and against accepting the physical realism of circulations induced in numerical models of free-surface flows that are twodimensional in plan. In a separate second part ofthe study an attempt is made to reconcile this evidence. An appendix outlining some ofthe concepts introduced in this work has been added to this first part, together with some introductory references, at the request ofthe reviewers.

Since flow in an urban drainage network is usually unsteady, the routing of hydrographs through a network is an important aspect of the design and analysis of urban drainage networks. The use of numerical solution of the Saint Venant equations to determine the propagation of unsteady flows through pipes has been validated by many researchers during the previous two decades. Amongst the many numerical techniques which have been developed for the analysis of unsteady flows in open channels is the four-point implicit finite difference scheme, commonly referred to as the Amein scheme. Use ofthe Amein requires the solution ofCx Δv= —RwhereCis a large sparsen x nmatrix and ΔvandRarenx column vectors.

摘要:
The development of local scour holes downstream a hydraulic jump type flow in the passage of time shows certain geometrical similarities which may be expressed by relevant parameters. The present paper attempts to explain the similarity existing either in the process of scour or in the profiles that the scour holes follow downstream of hydraulic jump flow. The investigation was carried out using three geometrically similar models with geometrical scale progressing by a factor of two.

A model for suspended sediment transport in unsteady and non-uniform flow is derived, in which the vertical dimension is eliminated by means of an asymptotic solution. The resulting depth-integrated model is tested for unidirectional flow cases. Also, an application is given to the siltation of a dredged channel.
