摘要:
In almost all classical hydraulics, problems are posed in terms of determining what happens at given places and times. It is possible, however, to pose these problems "the other way around", so to speak, by asking at which place a given event occurs at a given time. In quantitative terms, the problem is posed of determining those values of the independent variables at which given values of the dependent variables occur at given times.

摘要:
Deposition and erosion of sediment particles are studied experimentally in a laboratory channel. It was found that for the same hydraulic conditions, depositiongives different numerical results thanerosion. While erosion has been sufficiently studied before, a systematic investigation ondepositionhas - to our knowledge - never been done before.

摘要:
The critical Reynolds number at which the flow downstream of an orifice or nozzle in a pipe becomes turbulent is an important parameter as it is the demarcating point between purely laminar flow and relaminarising flow. The value of the critical Reynolds number is estimated for sharp-edged orifices, quadrant-edged orifices and long radius nozzles from indirect evidences using mean flow measurements. Different criteria are considered such as the variations of coefficient of discharge, loss coefficient, loss as percentage of piezometric head differential across the meter, and pressure recovery length downstream of the orifice. These criteria identify a range of transition Reynolds number for different orifices and nozzles. The critical orifice Reynolds number is seen to approach a constant value for low values of orifice or nozzle diameter to pipe diameter ratio. The critical Reynolds number increases gradually with increase in edge radius with the nozzle having the highest value.

摘要:
Summary The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation in the U.S.A. has been assigned with the task of demonstrating the feasibility of winter navigation on the St. Lawrence River. As a part of this program, an ice boom was designed, installed, and instrumented at Copeland Cut in the Wiley-Donden Canal near Massena, New York. In order to measure forces exerted on the boom elements by the ice cover, twenty tension transducers were designed, built and located in the critical members of the boom. Force measurements were made before, during, and after ship transits through the ice cover and boom opening. Typical signal recording of several of the tension transducers are presented.
