摘要:
This study evaluates the effect of some basic properties of clay-minerals mixed with cohesionless soil on scouring at the toe of a spillway. Scouring was analyzed by the concept of incipient motion of the soil particles. Experiment was performed to determine the influence of the clay-minerals (Kaolinites) and its compactness on the rate of volume of scouring. It was assumed that seepage does not exist at the toe of the spillway and the characteristics of the flow is submerged. Depth of the approaching flow at apron “a” and reference velocity “U” were kept constant throughout the experiment. The results show that factors affecting scouring of cohesive bed downstream of a spillway include: flow characteristics, soil properties, fluid properties and boundary conditions. Also when the rate of flow is finite, there is a limit to the extent of scour.

摘要:
It is shown that free stream turbulence can cause apparent scale effects in certain hydraulic models, namely, those involving highly curvilinear flow. These apparent scale effects can be more than triple the normal boundary layer displacement effect.

摘要:
Two sources of uncertainties to be considered when computing spectral densities of wind-generated wave forces are discussed. The size of resolution and degree of confidence of spectral estimates as well as the filtering process are found to be important for the spectral shape particularly in the subrange significant for structural design of dynamically excited linear systems. The second type of uncertainty is introduced by the fact that the coefficients of drag and inertia are random variables. The effect of their dispersion on the variation of the force spectral estimate in terms of exceedance probabilities of the dynamic wave loads - using similarity wave height spectra - is discussed. The analysis is illustrated utilizing a template steel platform in 550 ft of water as a sample structure.

摘要:
The geometrical characteristics of bed forms have a significant effect on the hydraulic roughness of alluvial channels. Knowledge of the size of ripples and dunes would make a rational approach to the resistance problem possible. In this paper a semi-theoretical approach to the problem of prediction of bed form geometry is proposed. The study is restricted to ripples and dunes but practically all available data have been used in arriving at dimensionless relations for the height and length of these undulations.
