The Trent Polytechnic/University of Lancaster Curriculum Development Project was set up in1986 with major funding from the (then) Manpower Services Commission and British School Technology-Trent, and a small goodwill grant from the Joint Matriculation Board. The initial two years of the Project (1986–88) were concerned with the preparation of resources to support GCE A-level Design and Technology.

Computer interfacing is becoming more and more popular in schools as both pupils and staff find it stimulating and fun. The user-port monitor was designed to fill a gap in the equipment provision at our school and should be viewed in that light. There is no provision for inputs so the monitor serves a very limited function. However, if a pupil grasps the fundamental ideas involved for outputting then an understanding of inputting will come more easily. The cost of the unit is in the order of about £3, which compares favourably with commercial units.

Today's automobile industry is growing quickly with several manufacturers competing for shares in the market, from family saloons to transit vans. In this area of industry, reducing costs is a major exercise. A few pence on one component could add up to thousands of pounds over a year's production. To this end, nearly all the parts in a vehicle today have been greatly modernised. Until now, though, very few changes have been made to the wiring harness.

A previous article (ESN, Spring 1989, p. 33) outlined the way in which I saw microcomputer interfacing developing over the next few years. However, the pace of development is so fast that some of these ‘future’ interfaces are already with us, hence a further article is now needed to explain what is, or shortly will be, available.

This is the fourth of a series of articles covering electronics material which is common to Alevel physics syllabuses offered by the various examination boards. The articles are aimed at teachers who are not familiar with this area of study. The first two articles dealt with elementary Boolean algebra and logic gates, and the third article was written as an introduction to the operational amplifier. Copies of these may be obtained from the Editor ofElectronic Systems News. This article offers an explanation of op. amp. action and discusses the effects of negative voltage feedback.

The original idea of producing a current/voltage graph on a CRO for the Teltron tube using VELA and an op. amp. was devised and reported by the first author in a VELA User Group Newsletter. The second author inspired by that report went on to devise a method in which the voltage was plotted in real time in proper units using VELA and a BBC micro. This article shows how the various ‘blocks’ solved different problems, while tracing the development of the circuitry towards the final system.
