摘要:
AbstractThe objective of this study was to describe the iron status of a sample of rural elderly home-delivered meals recipients as determined by a relatively non-invasive capillary blood sampling system. Fifty-six persons were assessed in their homes. The incidence of iron deficiency was considerable and was similar to incidences reported in other elderly populations. Females were at higher risk for iron deficiency man males despite a similar low dietary iron intake of 10-11 mg/day in both genders. Data were collected on drug use, general health conditions and other variables that may alter iron status in the elderly but they had no significant statistical effects in this study. We interpret this data on a high prevalence of iron deficiency in females as suggestive that they are at considerable risk of iron deficiency due to a lifelong poorer iron status than men.

摘要:
AbstractAn instrument was developed to assess the relationship between knowledge of dairy products and milk consumption in participants of a community wellness program (age = 50 to 89; n = 103). Multiple regression analyses indicated that consumption of lower fat milk was predicted by nutrition knowledge and trying to reduce fat intake (R2= .19, p<.0001), whereas, frequency of milk intake was predicted by milk consumption during youth, following a weight loss diet, and attitudes related to spoilage, packaging and expense (R2= .24, p<.0001). Thus, nutrition knowledge about dairy products is a better predictor of the type of milk consumed rather than the frequency of milk consumption.

摘要:
AbstractDue to varying disease processes, the elderly may have limited oral access to their otherwise intact gastrointestinal tract. In such individuals, the intact gastrointestinal tract must be accessed in other ways. Until the early 1980s, choices were limited to temporary solutions such as the nasogastric tube or to long operative procedures such as the operative gastrostomy tube. The introduction of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) allowed a quick, safe, and cheap procedure as an option. While PEG tubes have been used to help many of the elderly with their nutritional needs, they are not without risks. Below is a review of the literature concerning PEG complications in the elderly.
