SUMMARYSuccinate dehydrogenase activity, NAD‐linked malate, isocitrate and alcohol dehydrogenase activity and NADH:nitro‐blue tetrazolium reductase activity were demonstrated in sections of fresh or frozen pea cotyledons, using nitro‐blue tetrazolium as indicator. The localization of the various enzymes shows much resemblance. Initially, high enzyme activity is present in the cells of the epidermis and hypodermis. This activity decreases during germination. In the storage parenchyma, the enzyme activity in almost all cells increases during the first three days of the germination, and decreases subsequently, especially in the cells of the outer abaxial zone. The tracheary elements do not show any dehydrogenase activity. They appear during germination. The activity of the other cells of the vascular system increases during the first three days of germination but hardly changes in the subsequent seven

SUMMARYNet photosynthesis was measured in plants of four coffee varieties (two ofCoffea arabicaand two ofCoffea canephora(robusta)) at several temperature and light conditions.It was observed that light saturation occurred at approximately 0.11 cal cm–2min–1, whereas net photosynthesis decreased with increasing temperatures above 20 °C (approximately 7% per °C). Thearabicaselection S288–23 showed the highest net photosynthesis and the lowest percentual decrease with excessive temperatures. SUMMARYThe foliar uptake of134Cs in the primary leaves of beans has been studied under conditions of varying temperature, humidity and air flow on the leaf surface. Enhanced penetration was obtained by increasing air humidity or leaf moisture content through a decrease in transpiration. Accumulation and transport followed the same pattern and were influenced more by temperature than by humidity.
