摘要:
The forced Korteweg‐de Vries (fKdV) equation is the generic equation for resonant flow past an obstacle. However, for flow past topography on aβ‐plane, the case when the upstream flow is uniform is anomalous in that there is no quadratic nonlinear term in the fKdV equation. Here we show that in this important case an alternative theory is required and obtain a new evolution equation, which has some similarities to the fKdV equation with two significant differences. These are that a small‐amplitude topography now produces finite‐amplitude waves and the flow response is limited by a wave breakdown characterized by an incipient flow reversal. Various numerical solutions are d

摘要:
In seeking a description of convection in the Earth's mantle, one is led to the study of convection in a fluid at large Rayleigh number, and with large activation energy and volume for viscosity. This paper presents an initial attempt to understand the asymptotic behavior in the combined triple attempt to understand the asymptotic behavior in the combined triple asymptotic limit where these parameters are all large. The model is a simplified set of mean field equations. We show that it mimics successfully both constant and temperature‐dependent viscosity. We then show that temperature‐and‐pressure‐dependent viscosity gives an internal isoviscous structure. There are tempting inferences that might be suggested for the convective style in the earth's

摘要:
The free convection on a heated vertical plate is considered, both for the case of prescribed plate temperature and the case of prescribed heat flux. The parameter dependence of the similarity solutions are investigated, and the existence proofs given for a range of the parameter values.
