Abstract—The resolution and image quality of small‐screen CRTs have been analyzed. The resolution is primarily determined by the size of the luminous spot, which is determined both by the electron gun and by the size of phosphor particles. Image quality on phosphor screens is controlled by the packing density of the phosphor particles and by the number of layers of phosphor particles in the screen. We have developed a phosphor screen with 1.5 layers of phosphor particles in which packing voids have been minimized by the use of dusting techniques. The new phosphor screen used in a 0.5‐in. CRT is capable of displaying sharp SVGA images (1000 × 800 pixels) that are comparable in quality with the images on 13‐

Abstract—Six digital‐halftoning procedures, including one algorithm proposed by us, are compared to determine which one is best suited to binarization of a parabolic super‐resolving pupil filter. The procedures we deal with include iterative, error‐diffusion, error‐convergence, and 1‐pixel algorithms. We carry out a numerically simulated experiment in which an object that consists of either one point source or two coherent point sources is imaged in a 4fimaging system with either a continuous super‐resolving parabolic filter or one of its six different binary versions. The performance of binary filters is examined in terms of two parameters: the resemblance of their amplitude impulse response (AIR) to the AIR of the original continuous filter, as well as the two‐point Sparrow resolution criterion. We found that the best performance in terms of both figures of merit is achieved with the filter generated by means of one‐weight error diffusion when the weight is randomly positioned and the algorithm is processed on a

Abstract—While the need for image‐sequence compression has long been understood, recent applications have shown that existing methods are not always sufficient. A case in point is the class of applications referred to as “very low bit rate.” These applications require the transmission of sequences over very narrow channels,e.g., 9600 bits/s. The compression ratios required are substantially beyond those that can be accomplished (with reasonable image quality) using standard methods. The Gabor transform is a local frequency decomposition which has been proposed as a model of the early stages of human vision. It has found widespread use for a number of tasks in signal and image processing, including image compression.
