摘要:
Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy was used for the first time to investigate collective properties of metal-containing liquid crystals: the applicability of this experimental technique to investigate electronic properties of liquid crystals is proved. Loss data were collected versus temperature and primary beam energy. Present results show that temperature can change the orientation of molecules with respect to the surface and that the studied material, after few thermal cycles up to 135°C becomes conductor and keeps its electrical conductivity from the solid state up to the isotropic phase.

摘要:
The cyclopalladation reaction of the liquid crystalline species p-dodecyloxy-p'-methylazobenzene (DOMAB) leads to the bimetallic metallo-mesogene [(DOMAB)Pd Cl]2. Both the organic compound and its palladium organometallic complex have been investigated by quasielastic neutron scattering experiments in the nematic and smectic A phases. For DOMAB, the results exhibit a continuous rotation as expected for usual rod-like liquid crystals, while for [(DOMAB)Pd Cl]2they suggest a model wherein only some aliphatic protons can give a rotational diffusion.

摘要:
In hybrid aligned nematic layers a periodic deformation of splay-type may occur at convenient cell thicknesses, if the energetic cost for a mixed twist-splay distortion is less than the cost of a pure splay. In the case of bulk elastic isotropy, we have found that the periodic instability is forbidden, unless the torsional anchoring at the homeotropic substrate is considerably weak. Moreover, the surface-like elastic constantK24is shown deeply to influence the occurrence of the periodic pattern.

摘要:
Multilamellar liposomes of distearoyl phosphatidyl choline in excess water condition, doped by the barbituric drug Phenobarbital, in molar ratios between 0 and 0.5, were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The results suggest that the drug interacts with the lipid headgroup region: in particular, at the higher concentrations investigated, an interdigitated “gel phase,” with rigid chains, stiff and perpendicular to the lamellar planes, seems to be induced.
