It is shown that fatty acids such as the arrachidic and the lauric acids and their mixtures with cholesterol exhibit nonlinear optical properties. The effects of a 20 mW He-Ne laser (λ= 6328 Å) on such mixtures exhibiting smectogenic mesomorphism were examined and the optical activity dependence on the cholesterol percentage was determined.

Gyarmati's variational principle of thermodynamics is used to derive the equilibrium conditions as well as the equations of motion for biaxial nematic liquid crystals. From the equations of motion the nonequilibrium stress tensor is derived. The resulting equations are much easier than in the case of uniaxial nematics. This is probably a consequence of the fact that the state space can be chosen in such a way that no constraints for the generalized directors and their gradients have to be taken into account.

The principal importance of uniaxial orientational order of anisotropic molecules in forming bulk phases with an effectively reduced spatial dimensionality of the crystal lattice is shown. The conditions under which such phases are formed in liquid crystals are determined within the framework of the Landau theory of weak crystallization. The peculiarities of the nematic molecular ordering observed in liquid crystal mesophases are explained.

The possibility of stochastic pores appearance through the lipidic bilayers, in absence of the electric field, is demostrated. The thickness fluctuations due to structural inhomogeneities and the dynamic of amphiphile molecules can determine the perforation of the bilayer. 640×400 metal-insulator-metal (MIM) addressed color TN LCD with diagonal of 6″ has been developed. Special topology of MIM active matrix (AM) and simple technological process of itsfabrication have allowed to produce low-cost, high quality displays using standard photolithographic equipment with 2 mkm alignment accuracy and 5 mkm minimum feature size. Optimization of the key technological steps has been done.

Small-angle X-ray scattering was used for a definition of a structure of Langmuir-Blodgett films of tetraalkalinooxygidrochinons. The localisation of the molecules in the layer has been proposed. Phase transitions “solid crystal-liquid crystal” in Langmuir-Blodgett films, structural parameters of Langmuir-Blodgett films and the bulk phases were investigated.
