摘要:
The CRNI Certification Examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions covering the nine core content areas of infusion nursing: Technology and Clinical Applications, Fluid and Electrolyte Balance, Pharmacology, Infection Control, Pediatrics, Transfusion Therapy, Antineoplastic Therapy, Parenteral Nutrition, and Quality Assurance. The review questions provided below are modeled on the CRNI exam and are intended to help exam candidates test their knowledge of infusion therapy practice. This special section is a regular addition to theJournal of Infusion Nursing, with each edition focusing on a single content area.

摘要:
Over a 5-month period, 496 peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVs) inserted into neonates, infants, and children were prospectively studied. Data were collected on demographic patient characteristics, PIV indications for use, dwell time, and reasons for removal, together with nursing actions. The results showed that most PIVs were removed within 72 hours. In 6.6% of cases, some degree of phlebitis was present at PIV removal. The risk of phlebitis increased when the PIV remained in place longer, the child was younger, or medication was administered. The greatest risk was age, with neonates being 5½ times more likely to have some degree of phlebitis than non-neonates.

摘要:
Care of the patient with emergent neurologic trauma incorporates assessment, diagnosis, and treatment by a multidisciplinary team. Establishing intravenous access and determining fluid requirements necessitates an advanced knowledge of infusion support and of fluid and electrolyte balance. When these factors are addressed in a systematic, continuous manner throughout all phases of the trauma care continuum, the patient with emergent neurologic trauma has the best opportunity for restoration of optimal neurologic function.

摘要:
In the current ever-changing healthcare environment, home infusion therapy has become commonplace. As home infusion becomes more advanced and the homecare patient is sicker, a more highly skilled nurse is needed to provide these complex therapies. The question is: Are nurses in home infusion therapy clinically and educationally prepared to meet the challenges and needs in this setting? A partial replication of MacPherson’s 1999 study was conducted to determine the clinical and educational characteristics of the home infusion therapy nurse in a rural setting.

摘要:
An oncologic emergency is a clinical condition resulting from a structural or metabolic change caused by cancer or its treatment that requires immediate medical intervention to prevent loss of life or quality of life. Five oncologic emergencies (septic shock, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, tumor lysis syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, and spinal cord compression) are defined and described physiologically and clinically. Also, appropriate treatment of each oncologic emergency is discussed.

摘要:
This study examined the impact of nurses’ education and experience and the characteristics of their patients on their performance of peripheral intravenous cannulation. A researcher-developed peripheral intravenous cannulation assessment tool was used to assess nurses’ behavior during cannulation. Results from a hierarchical multiple regression indicated that patient demographic variables did not significantly predict overall ratings of peripheral intravenous cannulation performance. Nurses’ education and experience significantly predicted overall ratings of peripheral intravenous cannulation. Educational preparation at a postgraduate level was a significant positive predictor, and the years of experience in general nursing were a significant negative predictor of overall ratings of peripheral intravenous cannulation. The results from the current study highlight the importance of applied education, such as that indicated by a graduate degree, in providing and maintaining advanced clinical skills for specialty practice.
