AbstractThe desethylation (genea) and penetration delaying (pen) factors of resistance to organophosphorus insecticides isolated by genetical methods from the diazinon‐selected SKA strain of houseflies (Musca domesticaL.) were inbred into a strain whose resistance was compared with that of flies with single factors of resistance and the SKA strain.Penalone decreases kill marginally, and geneaalone raises LD50to 1·4–48 times that of susceptible flies, depending on the insecticide. The two factors together increase resistance greatly to many organophosphorus insecticides (up to 5–10 times or more to diazinon, malathion‐ethyl and chlorthion‐ethyl than of flies with geneaonly) indicating that the two factors interact. Interaction is greater against the thionates than the corresponding phosphates, probably becausependelays entry of thionates more than of the corresponding phosphates. AbstractThe spread to the nervous system of topically applied neurotoxic insecticides is discussed. During spread different insecticides may distribute themselves between fluid and solid phases within the insect's tissues in greatly differing ratios. These differences are reflected in their concentrations in the haemolymph, which is probably the medium mainly responsible for distributing insecticides within the insect, and also the main source from which insecticides enter the nervous system. Evidence for spread via more restricted pathways, such as tracheae or the nerves themselves, is conflicting.The mode of action of neurotoxic insecticides is briefly reviewed, including the role of secondarily released neuroactive stress substances, and the extent to which resistance is expressed at the site of action is also discussed.Finally, the nervous system is examined for new sites of insecticidal action which, if attacked, could give greater specificity.

AbstractResults are presented for the determination of organochlorine insecticide residues in grain, pulses and nuts sampled on arrival in Britain during the 2½ years up to June 1969. BHC was detected in nearly every sample but the general level was low, most samples containing less than 0·1 ppm. DDT was found less frequently. Very few samples contained more than 1 ppm of either insecticide. DDE in trace amounts was found in about 10% of the samples of grain and nuts and TDE was found in one sample of grain. AbstractThe polarographic behaviour of 38 herbicides was studied in 5 supporting electrolytes using single sweep derivative polarography. The 16 compounds showing the greatest polarographic activity were investigated further in order to estimate their detection limits. It is suggested that polarography might provide a useful technique for the analysis of 12 of these materials.
