摘要:
A. Definition of Weld LinesIn the broadest sense, “weld” or “knit” lines occur whenever two or more molten polymer interfaces are brought into contact. Actually the regions of different morphology and properties thus formed are not lines at all but are rather extremely complex three-dimensional areas of finite dimensions. For the purposes of our discussion we will use this rather broad interpretation of the term “weld line” in order to discuss the wide occurrence of the phenomenon in commercial fabrication processes.

摘要:
For the past couple of decades we have witnessed two opposing forces simultaneously operating to thrust this subject into the vertex of government and industry concern. Since 1955, proliferation of computing devices has spawned a dramatic growth in radiated radio frequency energy. Concurrently, the use of plastics in electronic cabinetry has grown to a dominant position over steel and other metals. Plastics, being transparent to radio-frequency energies, permit such to escape into the atmosphere, causing massive disruptions in communication networks and even hazards to our health.

摘要:
Composite materials offer many attractive features in the design of aircraft, naval, and automotive vehicles. In order to employ composites in design with more confidence, it is necessary to be able to assess their integrity and strength by nondestructive means. One of the most widely used methods of nondestructive evaluation is the ultrasonic method with its many variations and techniques.

摘要:
Glass fiber length is of great concern to both the compounder and molder of fiberglass reinforced thermoplastics. We know that the fiber attrition is considerable, but how short is it and where in the process does it occur? Can it be affected by using the longer length chopped strands? These are the types of questions that have gone unanswered because of the considerable time and effort necessary to quantify fiber length and length distributions. Burning the resin off, taking a photomicrograph of the glass, and physically measuring the lengths with a scale takes a great deal of time and money. A second method sometimes employed is a sieve analysis. This involves a series of screens which classify the fiber length by the size of the openings. This method, however, can lead to higher than actual averages due to a matting effect of the longer fibers which sometimes can trap the shorter fibers. Fibers that pass through the screen openings lengthwise can also distort the reported value. There is now available fast and accurate computerized, electronic image analyzing equipment that facilitates fiber length measurement.

摘要:
Plastic materials are inherently insulators and hence susceptible to the accumulation of static electricity. This buildup of static charge may create severe problems in many areas where plastics are used such as in hospital environments, fiber spinning and processing, explosives manufacture, and packaging of sensitive electronic components. With the ever-increasing use of electronic integrated circuits in business equipment, the need to protect these circuits from operator-induced static discharge (such as obtained from walking on a carpet) becomes vitally important. Therefore, the ability to eliminate unwanted static charges at low cost is very desirable.
