摘要:
This article presents a spotlight on some of the emerging technologies and new markets for polymers. Industries, in general, display cycles of expansion and retraction. Historically, many textbooks cite polymers as an industry whose golden age peaked by the 1970s. However, judging by the levels and variations of R&D activities in the areas of new polymers, blends and alloys, applications, and fabrication and compounding techniques not even discussed here, the field of polymer science appears to be entering a second Renaissance age. Even beyond leadingedge technologies, consumer and industrial demands for conventional applications, and rapidly emerging manufacturing capacities from threshold nations such as Korea to meet worldwide markets, point towards major industrial expansion beyond the next century.

摘要:
Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) belongs to a class of thermally stable engineering plastics. The present article describes the various structural modifications carried out on PPO to achieve certain special properties. Thermal properties of these modified polymers do not change much as compared to parent PPO; however, their solubility characteristics exhibit unusual trends. The broad range of solvents available for modified PPO enhances the possibility of casting PPO based membranes for use in membrane separation processes.

摘要:
A solution is presented for the heat transfer due to natural convection from a horizontal isothermal cylinder to a fluid whose rheological behavior is characterized by the Ellis model. The results from the analysis are compared with experimental data. A discussion is provided for the choice of the rheological model to be used for natural convection in non-Newtonian fluids.

摘要:
The mixed convection boundary layer flow on a vertical stationary or moving plate to a power-law non-Newtonian fluid is analyzed. An exact similarity solution is derived for the case when the surface temperature is inversely proportional to the distance from the leading edge of the plate. A discussion is provided on the effects of the flow index and buoyancy parameter on the velocity and temperature fields.

摘要:
An expression for the wake deficit in a turbulent flow of inelastic non-Newtonian fluids is combined with a function for the inner layer to yield a single formula for the complete velocity profile. The formula for the velocity profile has shown satisfactory agreement with experimental data for pipe flows. The formula is expected to be quite useful for approximate integral and differential calculation methods.

摘要:
The steady heat transfer in the laminar incompressible boundary layer flow of power-law fluids past a rotating disk with a step discontinuity in surface temperature is studied analytically. By means of appropriate transformation variables, the equations for the temperature profile and the local wall heat flux can be expressed explicitly in terms of the Prandtl number. The solution is obtained in terms of an infinite set of similar solutions which could be expressed as universal functions. For most of the non-Newtonian fluids commonly encountered having large Prandtl numbers; only a few of the functions are needed to yield accurate results.

摘要:
An analysis has been presented to investigate the transient mass transfer to a rotating disk in non-Newtonian power-law fluids. Consideration is given to the case of a step change in surface concentration. The transient mass flux and details of the concentration field are obtained and have been illustrated graphically. The range of Schmidt numbers investigated was 1 to 104while the viscosity index was allowed to vary from 0.2 to 1.5.

摘要:
The 11th conference on aging and stabilization of polymers was held from May 24 to 26, 1989, in Lucerne (Switzerland). These conferences are held annually in Switzerland. They are organized by the Institute of Materials Science of the State University of New York (New Paltz, USA), Dr. Angelos V. Patsis, a professor of this university, being a permanent chairman of the Organizing Committee. For many years Dr. Peter Klemchuk, Head of the Department of Chemical Additives for Polymers, Research Center, Ciba-Geigy Corp., Ardsley (New York, USA), has been a chairman of the Scientific Program Committee. The Organizing Committee includes well-known scientists: Prof. Norman Billingham (Head of Group, Brighton, University of Sussex, England), Prof. Dietrich Braun (Director of the Polymer Institute, Darmstadt, West Germany), Prof. Jean Marchal (Head of Laboratory, State Research Centre, Paris, France), and Professor David Wiles (Head of Department of National Research Council, Ottawa, Canada).
