摘要:
Microencapsulation is a process whereby small discrete solid particles or liquid droplets are completely engulfed by an intact membrane. The concept of microencapsulation originated a number of years ago and was initially utilized in carbonless copy papers [1]. More recently, it has received increasing attention in biomedical applications [2] and as a means of packaging Pharmaceuticals for controlled release purposes [3,4]. Both solids and liquids have been encapsulated successfully. Although most microcapsules fall between 5 and 500 μ diameter, they can be made below 1 μ and up to 5000 μ diameter. One can argue whether or not the latter should be classified as microcapsules. The material contained within a microcapsule is called the internal phase (IP) or core material. Because of the author's familiarity with the term IP, it will be used exclusively in this paper.

摘要:
The two-phase nature of a fiber-reinforced polymer gives rise to a multiplicity of possible failure modes [1,2]. The mode of failure depends not only upon the intrinsic fiber and resin properties, but also upon the interphase or interlaminar properties [3]. Thus we find that composite systems with essentially the same component, i.e., fiber and matrix, properties can exhibit different tensile [4], compressive [2], flexural [4], fatigue [5], and fracture [6] behaviors due to varying interlaminar properties.

摘要:
Carbon and graphite fibers of high tensile strength and modulus have been produced by the heat treatment of several textile precursor fibers, e.g., polyacrylonitrile, cellulose, and (less commonly) from copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride [1]. Fibers have also been prepared from pitch [2], phenol-formaldehyde condensates [3], polyphenylenes [4], coal, benzene [5], acetylene [6], polyvinyl alcohol [7], polybenzimidazoles [8], aromatic polyamides [9], and polymethyl vinyl ketone [10].

摘要:
Japan Synthetic Rubber (JSR) Co. has developed a new method to obtain 1,2-polybutadiene in which the 1,3-butadiene monomer is polymerized with special catalysts in a polar solvent [1]. The 1,2-vinyl structure content exceeds 90% [2,3] with a molecular weight of approximately 150,000 [4].

摘要:
The author prepared a paper on the reinforced plastics/composites industry in India which was presented to the 29th SPI (RP) Conference held in Washington, D.C. in February 1974. The paper recorded the progress of the industry up to 1973. The period up to the present has been a very interesting one for almost all process industries the world over following the drama of the petroleum crisis.
