Systematic investigation of the structure ofnatural organic polymersbegan in the early decades of this century as soon as experimental methods became available to measure very large molecular weights and to establish the arrangement of the giant molecules in the solid state as they exist in such important materials as cotton, flax, silk, wool, leather, starch, and rubber [1]. Several general principles emerged from these studies:

In the forefront of new formulating studies is that of preparing solid molding compounds retaining complete peroxide curing response. The solid systems can be attained by virtue of the unsaturated polyester-monomer or polyester-alkyd crystallizability or by reactive filler modification to give solid powder or granular-type molding compounds. The formulating of these systems to include low profile and low shrink properties has been and is being actively pursued. The potential for continuous processing and continuous utilization via injection and transfer molding is most exciting.

Injection molding is one of the most commonly used methods of processing polymers. The process allows rapid, automated production of a wide variety of complicated, three-dimensional parts in large production volumes. The process is capable of producing compound curvatures, snaps, hinges, bosses, threaded holes, gear teeth, and many other features. With proper design, these complex parts can be produced in a single molding operation.
