The problems of static electricity in the polymer industry are many and varied (see Table 1). They range from the removal of unwanted charge during fiber spinning and processing in order to avoid charging the machine and to reduce handling problems and dust pickup (fog marking), through the physiological problems associated with synthetic fiber carpets and automobiles to the explosion hazards of aircraft refueling, hospital environments, and mines. This is not to imply that all static is bad; in xerography, for example, the latent electrostatic image is developed by using toner (dry ink) charged by tumbling against the carrier; electrostatic separators make use of triboelectrification to accomplish separations not possible by other techniques.

Glass beads have been added to various forms of fiberglass reinforced plastic by many investigators [1-4], each of which have found specific advantages that have resulted from their addition. Ritter [1] said that the cost of glass spheres is less than half that of glass fibers, making them one of the most economical glass fillers available, while Potter's [2] bulletin No. T24-1 reporting on tests by De Bell and Richardson, gives data confirming that the use of glass spheres as an addition to fiberglass reinforced thermoplastics can improve physical properties, reduce cost, and solve production problems. Wells [3] in a preliminary investigation showed clearly that glass bead addition rather than powdered filler resulted in improved flow or viscosity characteristics at the same loading values, which should permit higher fiber loading than would be possible with random shaped particles. His work was performed with chopp strand mat and woven rovings. Potter's bulletin [4] No. PB24-1 lists 13 specific advantages attributed to the use of glass bead as a filler and reinforcement to plastics. The major advantages stressed here again were improved moldability which they attributed to minimum viscous drag from the spherical surfaces and also that the glass spheres act like tiny ball bearings and increase the polymer flow rate.
