Electromagnetic interference (EMI) received increasing amounts of press in the past few months, and will continue to do so in the future. Regulatory agencies in the United States have begun to come down hard on manufacturers of home computers and video games which link to television sets. These units, like the early CB radios, are adding additional electronic noise to the environmerit and interfering with sensitive electronics. Other forms of EMI are generated from natural sources, such as precipitation static, lightning storms, and solar flares. These natural sources, coupled with the largest source of EMI, legally operating transmitters which happen to operate in the range in which unintended receivers are susceptible, combine to form the “polution problem of the 80s”.

Polymer processing is an engineering field which deals with the conversion of synthetic high polymers into shaped articles ready for use. Impressive developments in the field of polymer processing in the last 20 years or so were precicipitated by the need to process plastic materials with an ever-increasing rate of production within stringent quality requirements. One of the most interesting methods for shaping plastic products is molding which involved all the possible ways for stuffing molds with thermoplastic or thermosetting polymers. Injection molding, compression molding, and transfer molding have now become some of today's routine approaches to plastics shaping.

In recent years, economics, technology, and resin availability have all combined to cause a dramatic rise in the use of high density polyethylene (HDPE) films throughout the plastics industry. Not only has the extrusion technology improved, but in addition the resin producers have developed resin structures and formulations which permit the production of an extraordinarily wide range of films for a wide range of usages [1]. As the result, HDPE film extrusion lines have been required to produce quality films at a rate that was unattainable a few years ago. Demands for better film quality and greater production flexibility have created the need for continuing improvements on the various components of the entire line. Although bubble cooling and web handling have improved in mechanical design, the major breakthrough lies in the screw and die designs, both of which are the essential parts of the entire blown film process. A proper screw design tailored for HDPE makes it possible to deliver the homogeneous melt at high throughput rate and within the temperature confinement of that particular resin. A good die design provides a uniform molten polymer with reasonable pressure drop. Die design technology is now available for tubular die to effect more optimized productivity and product quality. In this paper, new techniques are presented for designing the tubular die, and experimental works on HDPE screw are discussed.

This paper presents a different approach to manufacturing polyurethane products and finishes than most processors are presently using, the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and its future potential. We are referring to using materials currently called urethane oligomers. An increasing number of varieties have become commercially available, particularly since 1976, but how to use them effectively is not widely known.

United States and Japanese applications data for titanate coupling agents discussed in this paper help broaden our understanding of a new technology for providing filler and nonextractable plasticizer functionality in polyolefins. Titanate coupling agents react with the filler surface resulting in the formation of nonextractable organic monomolecular layers providing compatabiliza-tion and a molecular bridge between the interface of the inorganic filler and the organic polyolefin matrix.
