摘要:
The counterpressure structural foam process, although not new, is generating increasing interest in the structural foam community. Initial development work began as far back as the mid-1950s in Europe. The driving impetus for its development has been the surface enhancement that it provides. While this improvement is important and beneficial, it is not the only benefit of the process. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effect of the counterpressure process on the mechanical properties and behavior of counterpressure-processed engineering structural foam.

摘要:
The major progress in fiberglass-reinforced polyester composites since the 1940s has been attributed to the development of silane coupling agents that improve the bond across the interface [1]. Among the best coupling agents for polyesters is 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS), first described in 1962 (Fig. 1). Other methacrylate-functional silane coupling agents show comparable coupling activity in fiberglass reinforced general purpose polyester composites [2] (Table 1). The bond between glass and polyester with these coupling agents was “perfect,” i.e., fracture surfaces after 2-h water boil showed essentially no interfacial bond failure.

Since about 1950 a number of medical devices which make contact with the blood of living persons have been developed, manufactured, and used clinically. A partial list would include the pacemaker, arterial graft, prosthetic heart valve, hip prosthesis, heart lung machine, and kidney dialysis machine. The growing artificial organ market in the United States serves several hundred thousand patients annually at present, and amounts to several billions of dollars.

Three facets of flexible packaging are discussed in this article: the basic forms of flexible packages, the applications in food packaging for each form, and structural combinations for different applications. The variety of packaging capabilities available to those who choose flexible packaging to fill product and consumer needs is illustrated. The basic forms of flexible packaging are first reviewed, and then some newer, innovative pouches and their application to the food industry are discussed.
