摘要:
The off‐plane Eagle mounting has distinct advantages over other types in the construction of grating monochromators for the extreme ultraviolet. A description is given of an adaptation of that principle, employing a Rowland grating movement and a simple drive mechanism to achieve good resolution with little mechanical complication. Differential pumping in three stages allows operation without windows and still attains pressures in the 10−9Torr range in the measuring chamber.

摘要:
The contribution of small angle nuclear scattering to uncertainties in bubble chamber measurements is reexamined to include experiments at high momenta (above 4 GeV/c). Use is made of recent high energy elastic scattering data to estimate these uncertainties for &pgr;±,K±,p, andp¯. Finally the contribution from interference between Coulomb and nuclear scattering is evaluated for &pgr;±andp.

摘要:
A tunable high‐Q Fabry‐Perot resonator and related instrumentation which has been used to measure the shapes of nitric oxide rotational lines is described. The cavity was used around 150 GHz, but is suitable for any frequency above 120 GHz. The transmitter klystron is phase‐locked to a tunable 15 MHz crystal standard. A sawtooth sweep is applied to this standard resulting in a linear‐frequency sweep of the 150 GHz signal across the cavity resonance. The shape of the cavity response is a measure of the gas absorption. A beamsplitter is used to couple energy into the resonator. It is demonstrated that such resonators are well suited for certain microwave spectroscopy experiments.

摘要:
Chemical high explosives release about 4 400 000 J of energy per kilogram of explosive during detonation. Part of this energy can be converted to magnetic field energy by using the explosive to implode a conducting cylinder which contains an initial magnetic field. An apparatus is described which transfers the magnetic field energy to a resistive load.

A thoroughly bakeable Pyrex glass bellows manometer has been made. It has the precision of a mercury one, and also the advantages of low cost and easy construction. The bellows displacement is measured photoelectrically.

摘要:
An energy‐independent instrument capable of detecting total hydrogen fluxes (either H0or H0+H+) in the energy range 1–10 keV has been developed. Low extreme ultraviolet sensitivity has been achieved by scattering of the incident particles in a thin carbon foil to a detector located in an off‐axis position. Energetic electrons are removed by a magnetic field. Measurements of the ratio of the neutral to total fluxes leaving the foil, the angular distribution of the scattered particles, and the energy lost in transit of the foil are presented. The instrument has an efficiency for energetic hydrogen of 0.7%, an euv sensitivity of 2×10−3, and a geometrical factor of 0.06 cm2sr.

摘要:
This paper describes a torsional coupled pendulum combined with a tensile tester to measure simultaneously static tensile properties and dynamic and static shear properties of viscoelastic materials at constant temperature. The thermal environment of the sample is a liquid, permitting more efficient heat transfer and control in the sample itself. Several representative data are presented on carbon black filled rubber and highly filled rubber propellant samples.

X rays are well suited to the making of sharp photographic images because they are scattered much less by the emulsion than is light. However, careful attention must be paid to the design of apparatus used for making sharp images with x rays if satisfactory results are to be obtained. A method of making suitable jaws from Pt‐Ir alloy foil and mounting them is described.

摘要:
The use of a multichannel analyzer for the analysis of waveforms is described. A gated receiver coupled to the analyzer forms a ``digital boxcar integrator'' when the analyzer is operated as a pulse height analyzer. This arrangement has been used to study the backscattering of acoustic energy from water waves generated in a wind‐tunnel. The method is also applicable to the detailed study of the shape and stability of a repetitive pulse.

摘要:
A new technique for automating a Mo¨ssbauer mechanical spectrometer is described, which permits arbitrary velocity increments to be programmed on a tape prior to data collection. This novel feature permits optimum efficiency in accumulating data and allows considerable flexibility in measuring particular lines in a Mo¨ssbauer spectrum. The system is completely automated and does not require the use of a multichannel analyzer. The velocity stability and uniformity of the complete automated system described was better than 0.1%, and the measured line width for57Fe in a thin absorber was only 10% greater than the theoretical limit.
