摘要:
Performance of a dye laser triggered spark gap is described with a triggering threshold of only 2 kW peak power and 5 &mgr;J pulse energy. This spark gap is used as a switching element in a nitrogen laser resulting in a delay between dye laser and nitrogen laser emission of only 20 nsec and a subnanosecond jitter.

摘要:
An analog pulse divider has been developed for use with one‐ and two‐dimensional high‐resolution, position‐sensitive detectors. The dividing element is a four‐quadrant multiplier. The accuracy is better than 1% over dynamic ranges of 1:10 for the energy signal and approximately 1:100 for the position signal, respectively. Division is carried out in approximately 12 &mgr;sec.

摘要:
A tensile technique employing resistive heating was developed for testing iridium sheet material at temperatures up to 1680°C. To avoid the problem of current arcing at failure, a circuit was designed to shut off the current just prior to specimen failure. The circuit and test method are described, and typical results for iridium strength and elongation are presented.

摘要:
A simple, rugged optical mount incorporating a high strain piezoelectric ceramic is described. Capable of extremely precise, repeatable, and rapid focusing over several tens of microns, the compact mount is useful as a fine‐focusing actuator in manual or servo‐controlled instruments. Properties of the piezoelectric material potentially allow fine‐focusing and structural functions to be combined in a single molded ceramic element.

A flowmeter has been developed for measuring gas flows in the range of a few milliliters per minute or less entering a reactor operated at subambient pressure. The flowmeter is based upon oil displacement, and is easily constructed from readily available laboratory materials.

A lithium ion source of the Blewett‐Jones type has been assembled and tested for radial injection into the CSATA cyclotron. Ion currents up to 1.5 mA at the extractor are obtained. The extracted beam is focused at the cyclotron vacuum chamber port by a quadrupole doublet. The injected ion current is 500 &mgr;A.

A cryostat is described in which optical images are transmitted from a helium‐filled chamber at 0.3 K up to room temperature, using coherent fiber optics. A superfluid‐tight glass to metal seal is used to seal the fiber optics rod into the cryostat.

A simple, compact ion source has been developed capable of producing a continuous, uncontaminated beam of singly ionized gold with intensities up to 0.75 mA. Electron‐impact ionization is used in a gold plasma; no support gas is used.

A procedure is presented for verifying the alignment of a crystal surface with respect to the x‐ray beam in the back‐reflection Laue technique. The procedure involves the use of a NaCl reference crystal attached to the surface of interest. Application to the determination of the orientation of a skew surface is discussed.
