摘要:
A new simple differential technique using two Langmuir probes yields an analog signal proportional to the local electron temperature fluctuations in a plasma, even in the presence of density and potential fluctuations. By externally driving a periodic change in the plasma temperature, it has been possible to check this technique and its accuracy and to enable calibration. This differential technique is used to measure the amplitude fluctuations in a turbulent collisionless drift wave spectrum present in a laboratory plasma.

摘要:
A gas‐filled microcalorimeter is described. This instrument can be used to measure the simultaneous work and heat phenomena during uniaxial straining or destraining of thin sheetlike materials. The average accuracy of the heat‐flow measurements of 0.1 mW or higher is about ± 10%. The same accuracy applies for heat measurements of 2 mJ or greater in the case of 1–2 min deformation experiments.

摘要:
A two channel Blumlein excited N2laser is described. The output of the laser consists of two pulses of approximately 250 kW peak power separated by 15 nsec. The laser is designed to study transient absorption spectra with characteristic lifetimes in the range of 20 nsec to several seconds.

摘要:
Apparatus is described which produces 50 &mgr; deuterium pellets that are being used in a laser produced plasma facility. The pellets are sliced from a continuously spun solid deuterium thread at a rate of up to 10 pellets/sec. The methods of thread production and slicing, and pellet collimation are discussed. A unique feature of the apparatus is that it uses no liquid helium.

摘要:
A ball bearing of high thermal conductivity has been developed to provide conductive cooling for rotating optical devices at 2 rps. The bearings are made of pure copper which is silver coated. The bearing and hub are spring loaded to provide constant contact pressure even under changing temperature conditions. The bearing can cool a 310 g circular variable optical filter to 10K within 83 min. The bearing was utilized in a helium‐cooled spectrometer which was launched on a Black Brant VC rocket at Poker Flat, Alaska, on 22 March 1973, during a condition of post auroral breakup. Spectra were obtained form 185 km to about 40 km. Some 630 spectral scans covering the range of 6.75 to 23.3 &mgr; were telemetered. The special bearing performed well through all portions of the rocket trajectory.
