Techniques and apparatus for the accurate and fast measurement of temperature and speed at many ``points'' within a fluid are described. Using bead thermistors in liquids and a digital data acquisition system, up to 150 measurements/sec can be made for (1) temperatures within and beyond the range from 10 to 40°C to an accuracy of ±0.01°C and (2) speeds in the range from 0 to 5 cm/sec to an accuracy of ±0.1 cm/sec. The very small size of bead thermistors now available with bead diameters less than 0.25 mm and with lead diameters less than 0.025 mm, means that many of these transducers may be mounted with small or negligible disturbance to the flow. A mounting configuration where the beads are supported only by their leads is described.

The design, construction, and operational characteristics of a simple low pressure sputtering module are presented. This device which is of the triode configuration has proven to be unusually reliable and has consistently produced films of metals, semiconductors, and insulators having excellent physical, electrical, and optical properties.

摘要:
A modification of the Ashby‐Jephcott laser interferometer is described, by which both interferometric and schlieren information from an unsteady gas flow can be recorded at rates up to 5 MHz. The laser interferometer schlieren system (LIS) facilitates interpretation of the fringes recorded by the Ashby‐Jephcott system by recording both fringe and density gradient information in time. Use of the LIS is described in measuring &rgr;(t) for the shock and subsequent expansion flow from an open ended shock tube in air.

摘要:
Pyrolytic graphite serves two functions in a new type of LaB6cathode; it supports and heats the LaB6emitter. The high anisotropic resistivity of pyrolytic graphite allows a compact heater‐emitter design a few millimeters in size, and the chemical compatibility of graphite with LaB6at the operating temperature of about 1500°C prevents any lifetime reducing chemical reactions between the two materials. Typical heating power inputs have been measured to be 15 W at a heating current of about 3 A. One of these LaB6cathodes has been tested in a demountable vacuum system at an average emission current density of 1.6 A/2cm for over 900 h without signs of impending failure.
