We describe an EPR cavity for doing measurements on readily oxidized samples—fluorides—at the molten state. The use of hydrogen fluoride at high temperatures, as a reducing atmosphere, sets stringent requirements on the materials used for making crucibles and oven.

摘要:
A new technique for a continuous monitoring of the displacement of a surface moving at velocities up to several millimeters per microsecond was developed. The method is based on microwave (24 GHz) interferometry. The technique enables precise measurements of the free surface velocity as well as covenient observation of small velocity step increases. The measured velocity is averaged over a surface area of the order of 10 cm2. Various effects which may influence the measurements are discussed. Preliminary measurements of free surface velocities of shocked metals are presented.

摘要:
A surface pattern flow visualization technique is demonstrated based on the principle of oxygen quenching of dye fluorescence. The technique uses visible light excitation and streams of oxygen or nitrogen, which are inexpensive and nontoxic. A sensitive material can be spray coated on shapes of interest to study flow at surfaces.

摘要:
An improved integration method has been developed for use with Calvet‐type differential calorimeters. The new integrator is based on a voltage‐to‐frequency converter combined with a digital system interfaced to a microcomputer. The microcomputer provides programmed control of the integrator and, with little or no operator intervention, calculates the total heat effect making corrections for background and baseline drift. With this method a calorimetric precision of the order of ±0.1% has been achieved in experiments carried out at 651°C. This is about one order of magnitude of improvement over graphical methods and about a factor of 3 better than the analog integration techniques which we have used previously.

A water vapor sensor for stratospheric aircraft based on the principle of ultraviolet fluorescence has been built and flown successfully. The instrument exhibits high sensitivity, rapid response, and good resistance to contamination. It is available for use in NCAR‐associated research.

A centering device has been used on a small dilution refrigerator to reduce vibrational heating by an order of magnitude. The refrigeration capability with the device is shown to approach the expected value for a given temperature.
