摘要:
In this paper we discuss some improvements in a new technique and inherent apparatus for preparation of thin foils. In the present version of the special electrolyzer used there is a more convenient separation of the rotary and floating motion between the cathode and the anode, motion which previously was confined only to the anode. With the rotating anode and the floating cathode it is possible to obtain maximum ease of operation and maximum control of the surface parallelism of the specimen being thinned. The measuring of residual thickness against time is also facilitated. The possibility of regulating the balancing force of the floating motion over a wide range starting from zero gives rise to another important variable in choosing the best thinning conditions and, in particular, permits the thinning of disks of smaller diameter. The most important technical improvement concerns the employment of electrochemically moulded cathodes with profiles rigorously conjugated with a perfectly flat anodic surface.

摘要:
The design and construction of high‐power nitrogen 3371 Å laser is described in detail. The laser produces 13 mJ at 3371 Å in a 12 nsec FWHM pulse at a repetition rate of 5 pulses per second. Various models of the laser have yielded 108pulses with very infrequent component failure. When a second mirror is added, strong laser action is observed in the N2first positive system; the total resultant ir output energy is about 3 mJ in a 50 nsec FWHM pulse.

摘要:
A portable instrument for on‐site determination of polar electrojet position and intensity has been assembled and used during auroral magnetic disturbances at Ft. Churchill, Canada. The instrument provided data for determination of optimum launch time for rockets used to study auroral phenomena associated with the disturbances.

摘要:
After efficient spectral narrowing with an interference filter and two succesive Fabry‐Perot etalons single‐mode operation of a flashlamp pumped dye laser has been achieved using a Michelson‐type mode selector as proposed by Fox and Smith. Typical output powers of 1 kW with a linewidth of 0.05 pm have been obtained.

摘要:
The energy analyzer described is of the spherical mirror‐spherical grid retarding potential type. It obtains high resolution through a small energy overlap between low energy pass and high energy pass filter functions. The first filter is a spherical electron mirror operating slightly off‐axis in a reflection mode. The second filter is a conventional spherical grid retarding field operating in transmission. Unlike other narrow bandpass monochromators, acceptance angle does not affect resolution and can be made to yield high luminosity. In addition, the resolution varies as the square of the entrance aperture dimension; hence larger entrance aperture areas can be used than for dispersive electron energy analyzers of similar size. This analyzer is examined theoretically, and experimental results as applied to ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) are presented.

Susceptibility measurements, &khgr;′, can be precisely and simply performed in terms of the relative frequency shift (&Dgr;&ngr;/&ngr;) of a rf self‐oscillator, occurring when the permeability of the space is changed by the introduction of the sample. The essential feature is the transfer of the sensitive volume from the inductor to a narrow gap of a ferrite toroid. When &Dgr;&ngr; is a periodic function, standard frequency modulation detection is employed. The calibration of the apparatus against known diamagnetic and paramagnetic substances indicates a sensitivity &Dgr;&ngr;/&ngr;0= 1.6 × 10−8(which corresponds to a minimum detectable value of the susceptibility per unit volume of 3 × 10−9emu, accessible with a sample volume as small as 0.1 cm3). It is also shown that the minimum &Dgr;&ngr;/&ngr; can be further decreased with respect to the experimental condition of the present measurements.

摘要:
A method of fabrication of Burnett cells is presented which significantly reduces the error in Burnett data due to the volume change with pressure of the Burnett cell. The Burnett method can be used to generate extremely high precisionP‐V‐Tdata because no volume or mass measurements are required. The new design uses similar, homogeneous, hollow spheres for the Burnett cell in order to eliminate almost completely the usual contribution to the error from volume distortion corrections.

An inexpensive, simple laboratory apparatus is described which can be used for field annealing of ferroelectric crystals and ceramics. It can also be used as a reliable thermal chamber for determining accurately the temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarization and dielectric constant up to about 800°C.

摘要:
The instrumentation of a powder x‐ray diffractometer for automatic data acquisition and control of experiments is described. The present system configuration is set up to step‐scan preselected intervals in the 2&thgr; range, in preset stepping increments, while operating either in the fixed time or in the fixed count mode. The data can either be stored in punched paper tape and cards, or be transmitted to a computer. At the end of a complete 2&thgr;‐scan, one or more experimental parameters can automatically be changed, after which the whole scan is started again.
