摘要:
A method for studying the pressure and temperature dependence of rare gas halide and halogen emissions is described. The tesla discharge utilized in this method is characterized in detail with respect to its temporal behavior and its radiant output. The light is found to be produced in moderately intense pulses as short as 0.5 &mgr;s in duration. Average dc radiant powers for strong emitters can exceed 5 mW. The method appears suitable for the study of most emitters that can be produced by electron beam excitation.

The use of13CO2in carbon dioxide lasers enhances the available spectral range very significantly but is prohibitively expensive if gas flow through the laser is required. A TEA CO2laser equipped with a gas recirculation system is described. This reduces gas costs to negligible levels even for expensive isotopic mixtures.

摘要:
An instrument is described which provides a multichannel direct‐reading capability for photoelectric spectrographic detection. The important feature of the instrument is the ability of the user to select at will any combination of channels for position adjustment and to move these while preserving the optical integrity of the enclosure. Photomultipliers are used and the results of performance tests are described.

摘要:
The parameters governing the response time of a system to follow transient changes of conductivity caused by short pulses of radiation are discussed, and designs for coaxial conductivity cells with parallel‐plate electrodes to obtain subnanosecond time resolution are described. The performance of the system is evaluated using ionization pulses of 30‐ps width. This yields values in agreement with theory: 95 ps for the rise time and 80 ps for the fall time with virtually no signal distortion. Ways to decrease these times further are discussed.

摘要:
The construction technique and resulting electrical performance of high‐voltage impulse transformers for ’’pulser‐sustained’’ laser applications is presented. The compact structures exhibit excellent rise‐time and power‐handling capacity over a wide range of operating conditions. The distributed core geometry permits impulse power operation at several megawatts within the kilowatt average power regime. Reliable performance at a repetition rate of up to 40 kHz has been demonstrated. These simple condensed winding and torous core devices can be constructed in minutes and at negligible cost.

A sciopticon based on the pinhole‐camera effect is being used to determine individual beamlet contributions to the quality of neutral beams extracted from multiaperture ion sources. The technique outlined in this note can be used to study the effects on beam optics of nonhomogeneous source plasma density or acceleration gap nonuniformities, grid nonparallelism or aperture misplacement, and space‐charge blowup or scattering in the neutralizer cell.

摘要:
A simple technique for the measurement of the beam shape parameters of pulsed lasers, with just a single pulse of the laser is described. It involves the use of several beam dividers inclined at very small angles to the beam axis, reflecting the beam back to a screen or a phosphor placed near the exit of the laser. The reflected images are then photographed by a camera to yield the beam parameters.
