A cw CO2laser has been successfully operated without using any ballast resistance. For stabilizing the discharge, the principle of a constant‐current source employing the ac resonance technique is used. The stability of the laser output power has been very good and its fluctuation has been reduced to a value as low as 1% using only passive components.

The sustained, reliable operation of a repetitive, high‐current pulsed arc discharge in a large‐volume container has been found to require the use of ignition enhancing techniques to maintain adequate turn‐on reproducibility. Application of a few grams of 20‐mesh granulated zinc to a portion of the copper cathode surface produces a striking reduction in the rise time and turn‐on reliability of pulses carrying up to 1000 A.

A new dye laser cell for operation with pulsed pumping lasers is described. It can work up to 400 pps with a volume of dye solution as small as 2 cm3.
