摘要:
Impact bruising during harvesting, manual and mechanical handling, and during transportation of agricultural perishables results in major crop loss and/or commodity quality loss. An instrumented pseudofruit has been developed which permits automatic measurement and recording of vector accelerations (impacts) along with the time of occurrence. This device will assist in identifying time and amplitude of damaging impacts. The features of this device are: (1) It is a miniaturized, totally integrated, portable digital system which is cast in a 15‐cm rigid cube or 10‐cm‐diam sphere. (2) It is calibrated to provide an adequate degree of accuracy for the measurement of impact it will experience. (3) Serial communication is provided to permit program initialization and data transfer to an independent processing computer, where custom‐developed routines convert the measured impacts into equivalent bruising and/or drop heights for the fruit of interest (e.g., apple).

摘要:
An electrodeless method has been applied to the measurement of an ionic conductivity of a single crystalline RbAg4I5as a function of temperature. The activation energy obtained by this method is in good agreement with those of earlier works.

摘要:
In aiming to reduce the duration of measurement, a four‐channel dynamic light‐scattering system was developed. The four independent lights scattered at a fixed angle from a sample were detected in homodyne mode by a four‐channel photon counter. The accumulation and analysis of the data were carried out with a microcomputer. By this four‐channel system, swimming speed of bacteria was measured within 15 s with a statistical error of a few percent.

摘要:
A Merrill–Bassett diamond anvil cell for high‐temperature/high‐pressure studies up to 5 GPa at 1000 K and 13 GPa at 725 K is described. To maintain uniform, well‐characterized temperatures, and to protect the diamond anvils from oxidation and graphitization, the entire cell is heated in a vacuum oven. The materials are chosen so that the pressure remains constant to within ±10% over the entire temperature range.

摘要:
Techniques are described for preparing electrical contacts to samples for measurements in the diamond‐anvil high‐pressure cell. Typical dimensions are 150×150×30 &mgr;m. Bulk, epitaxial, and multiple‐quantum well (MQW) structures on GaAs and InP wafers have been successfully contacted. The techniques are also suitable for other experiments than those at high pressure, where miniaturization is important.

摘要:
Small‐angle neutral beam scattering is a promising technique to measure the local ion temperature in a hot plasma. We will show that in general a 10% accuracy in the temperature measurement can be obtained with a temporal resolution in the order of 1 ms and a spatial resolution of 10 cm. These values are less favorable than previous claims by Van Heeschetal.
