We describe the use of a differential transformer to detect the position of the buoy in a magnetic densimeter, an instrument for precise measurement of fluid densities. This detector can be used in cases where the buoy is not visible and it can be assembled from commercial electronic components.

A system is described which provides for direct measurement of the difference between linear dichroism, circular dichroism, or phase shifts (in transmission or reflection) of two adjacent samples. A uniaxial crystal is used to produce two incident light beams of mutually orthogonal polarization. The total intensity is analyzed by a single detector to give the differential quantities.

Two trigger modules suitable for use in flash photolytic apparatus are described. One generates a 30 kV pulse for overvoltage triggering of flash lamps or control of spark gaps. The other produces high voltage, high current pulses for initiating conduction in mercury ignitrons.

A Philbrick model 1702 parametric amplifier has been used as an input device for the measurement of mass spectrometer ion currents. The results obtained have been comparable with those obtained by other methods, although the cost is very modest. Combined with an Analogic AN‐2544 ratio meter, it has been used to make an economical ratio recording system for oxygen isotopic analysis.

A simple and inexpensive fluorescein detector is described that is capable of detecting a solution of approximately one part fluorescein to five million parts of water. The device can be constructed in a laboratory or workshop equipped with the minimum tools and instrumentation. As conceived, the device is used as a leak detector and is designed to activate a relay when an aqueous fluorescein solution exceeding a concentration of one part per five million flows through a quartz tube.

A moderately powered, multipurpose, fast pulsed discharge source is described in which standardized components are used to ``parallel switch'' a condenser bank. The system is virtually maintenance free, exhibits an overall jitter of less than 0.2 &mgr;sec in current breakdown and can operate flexibly over a range in storage energy from 0.8 to 8 kJ.

Broadening curves for the parallel plate energy analyzer are presented for Gaussian input kinetic energy distributions, for no angular broadening, and for a uniform angular distribution over ±30for an analyzer of nominal resolution of forty. Use of the curves is demonstrated on a measured kinetic energy spectrum of Ar+ions. The broadening curve for two Gaussian functions is given for comparison.

In this note, a microwave lens is described giving easy access through the copper shell of the SPICA experiment without disturbing the shielding effect. The lens consists of a number of small holes drilled in a solid plane metal disk. With increasing radius, the holes in the lens become smaller in diameter, so the phase velocity will increase towards the edge which produces a focusing effect for microwaves.

A differential pressure sensor is described. This instrument is capable of resolving pressure changes of about 3.0 kN/m2in ambient pressures of up to 1.0 GN/m2. The instrument is of the deflecting diaphragm type with the movement being measured by an inductive transducer.
