摘要:
Scientific equipment often uses “nonmagnetic” stainless steel, relying on the steel’s nonmagnetic behavior to leave external magnetic fields unaltered. However, stainless steel’s permeability can rise significantly when it is welded or machined, possibly perturbing an external field. Such perturbations will diminish well above the stainless steel’s saturation point. The authors measured the permeability of both welded and machined 304 stainless steel as a function of an external magnetic field, and found that both saturate at fields of approximately 0.25 T. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A superfluid-helium-tight optical fiber feedthrough has been developed. Heat shrinkable Kynar provides a removable seal around a plastic optical fiber. The seal preserves the continuity of the fiber and is reliable after repeated thermal cycles. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A new method used in constructing a noise-immune multichannel trigger generator of high voltage was presented. The attention was paid to controlling the charge/discharge process of the energy storage capacitor in every channel of the trigger generator. This is much different from the old methods in which the attention was paid to decreasing the electromagnetic noise invading the trigger generator. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

Using a capillary to suppress diffusion allowed construction of an electrically calibrated vapor dispenser for organic solvent vapors. The rate of flow was essentially the applied electric power divided by the heat of vaporization. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
LabVIEW provides a method to create a user friendly automated Virtual Instrument that can be programmed to perform simultaneous display and control functions from several different laboratory instruments. This note describes how LabVIEW was used to create a temperature programmed desorption virtual instrument to facilitate easy control of sample temperature and data collection and handling. The program is easy to use, fairly versatile for different types of catalysis samples, and the data collected can be imported into most spreadsheets. The program as written controls the temperature in a linear fashion with very little deviation from the user defined ramp. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.
