Two types of afterpulses with quite distinct delay times with respect to the primary pulse can be observed in a magnetic electron multiplier. This Note gives details of their characteristics and the effect on them of altering various multiplier parameters. Some mechanisms for their generation are also discussed.

Employing Swenson's method of temperature control [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 25, 608 (1954)], we have designed and built a simple cryostat capable of controlling temperature over a very wide range (it has been used successfully between 80 and 309 K, with the potential of being used at even lower temperatures when suitable coolant is employed). The features of this particular construction allow the low temperature chamber to be exposed to the atmosphere outside. Various advantages and disadvantages of this apparatus are presented.

A simple method of secondary ion velocity filtering for sputter ion mass spectroscopy is described. The experiments on Ni surfaces show that the method allows sorting of secondary ions according to their adsorption energies and thereby enhances the analytic capabilities of the spectrometer.

This Note describes a cleavage device for alkali halides. This device was used in our laboratories for crystals of NaCl, KCl, and LiF with very good results. For this last crystal special care should be taken due to its cleaving characteristics; this harder material is quite difficult to handle. Our success in cleaving LiF under vacuum makes perhaps of general interest a description of the cleaving device. The freshly vacuum cleaved surface offers the possibility of initial nucleation studies of evaporated single crystal thin films. In order to simultaneously meet the needs of heating and high vacuum, the device is made of stainless steel.

Tungsten heaters often deposit opaque films on glassware. This Note describes the use of household bleach (hypochlorite solution) to completely remove these coatings. The process is accelerated by warming the bleach, and in all cases there is no attack on the glassware.

The new apparatus for contactless measurement of the photomagnetoelectric (PME) effect is described and its analysis is carried out. By this technique the contactless measurement of lifetime and surface recombination velocity in semiconductors is made possible.

A method is described by which a backbone model of a protein can be constructed making use of the two angles of rotation at the alpha carbon of each amino acid in a peptide chain. A model of the protein myoglobin constructed using this method is shown.
