摘要:
A description is given of a method of modifying the mirror‐drive mechanism in a commercial Fourier transform spectrometer in order to double the resolution. Comparative spectra are given which were taken before (resolution ≈ 0.050 cm−1) and after the modification (resolution ≈ 0.026 cm−1).

A commercial quadrupole mass filter has been modified to accept a channel electron multiplier. The modification is relatively simple and inexpensive. The resulting mass filter is very sensitive (gain > 107) and compact.

摘要:
Increased stability for electrodeless discharge lamps used in atomic spectroscopy is attained by mounting a heater coil below the lamp. Heating by convection maintains the lamp at a constant temperature resulting in stable output within 2%.

摘要:
The design and operation of a simple gas circulating pump is described. This pump incorporates a piston with an O‐ring seal and hollow glass check valve and is capable of circulating gases over a large pressure range, 769–1 Torr. The pump could conceivably operate at lower pressure by changing the check valves. During pumping operations the leak rate was less than 1 &mgr; (for 400–500 cycles). The maximum pumping speed is about 110 cm3/sec although greater pumping rates can be obtained from larger pumps. The pump is designed so that it can be easily disassembled for cleaning.

摘要:
A load cell for combined axial load and torque with good sensitivity and repeatability and low cross talk is described. The instrument consists of a maraging steel tube with gimbal mounted dc differential transformers to sense the axial deflection and twist of the tube. Free‐Flex pivots were used in the gimbals to minimize friction.
