摘要:
A method is described wherein metallic foils of those elements not available in rolled foil form may be prepared for use as absorbing foils in Ross balanced filters for x‐ray analysis. Powdered antimony was evaporated in vacuum from a heated crucible to form a deposit 0.0015 cm thick on Cellophane backing, and the foil thus prepared was balanced with a rolled tin foil. A curve is given which shows the relationship between the amount of metal evaporated and the corresponding thickness of deposit. This method increases the applicability of the Ross balanced filters to x‐ray measurements by adding several essentially monochromatic pass bands to those previously available.

摘要:
The details of construction of an improved induction accelerator which gives electrons 20‐million electron‐volts energy are described. The accelerator has a 19‐inch diameter pole face and weighs approximately 3.5 tons. The x‐ray output as measured in a thick wall ionization chamber is 16 r.p.m. at one meter. The most important improvement incorporated in this accelerator is the electromagnetic expansion of the equilibrium orbit which can be timed to send the electrons against the target at any desired energy up to 20 million electron volts. The accelerator is now in use at the University of Illinois.

摘要:
A description is given of: (a) the construction and operation of a complete throttle expansion hydrogen liquefaction cycle employing the Kapitza circuit for operation with ordinary commercial gas without fouling of the heat exchangers by low freezing impurities; (b) a simple scheme for employing ``dry ice'' as a supplementary precooling agent which effects a considerable saving in the amount of liquid nitrogen used by the liquefier; (c) a satisfactory method of soldering together a Kapitza side‐by‐side multiple tube interchanger; (d) an efficient and easily built combination heat exchanger and trap for freezing out water and oil vapor from large, rapid streams of compressed gas.
