摘要:
An instrument for sorting time‐intervals into size‐classes is described. It discriminates between intervals which differ in length by only a few tenths of one percent. This makes it possible to study the time distribution of the impulses in Geiger‐Mu¨ller counters. Two argon counters, excited with gamma‐rays and operated at rates between 0.9 and 3.0 counts/sec., gave results in excellent agreement with fluctuation theory; but a hydrogen counter, operating at rates between 1.9 and 4.5 counts/sec., and excited either with gamma‐rays or with light, gave results so discrepant that they cannot reasonably be explained on the basis of statistical fluctuations or instrumental errors.

摘要:
A simple and inexpensive circuit for obtaining power at constant current (independent of load changes) from an a.c. supply of constant voltage has found several applications in laboratory work, particularly in operating arcs and glow discharges. The use of constant current permits the elimination of ballast resistors and chokes, with the attendant power loss, and often improves the stability so much that power inputs may be increased. Other sample applications are protection of the oscillators and rectifiers of a cyclotron against damage by short circuits or gas bursts, and operation of hydrogen arcs for proton sources. When this circuit is used on the input to a rectifier constant direct current will be obtained, and the rectifier tubes protected. In the present paper the theory of the circuit (including effects of losses) is briefly treated and the design of apparatus discussed, with descriptions of two typical outfits.

摘要:
This paper gives technical data on a Wheatstone bridge type of balanced direct current photoelectric amplifier adapted for use on 110‐volt a.c. commercial power lines. The instrument is especially designed for use with the standard recorders employed by the U. S. Weather Bureau, and is to be used in the study of ultraviolet solar radiation and the determintaion of the amount and variation of ozone in the stratosphere. Performance tests indicate that the instrument is equivalent to the older battery type in sensitivity and precision. It is, furthermore, free from the disadvantages of requiring constant voltage adjustments, sensitivity tests, and the constant attention of an experienced operator.

摘要:
A fluorite vacuum monochromator and auxiliary apparatus for the study of photochemical reactions in the region 1300–1900A are described. Lines in the nitrogen arc spectrum were isolated in as high as 85 percent purity. Estimates from three sources give intensities of the order of 1×1013quanta per second for the 1742–45A doublet.

摘要:
A mechanical device is described for extracting a root or obtaining a power of successive ordinate values of curves. It is particularly useful in calculating the total volume flow in a pulsating stream from velocity (or rate of flow) records obtained from venturimeters, orifice meters or Pitot tube meters in which the deflection of the record is usually proportional to the square of the flow, and with hot wire meters and thermostromuhrs in which the deflection of the record is proportional usually to the square root of the rate of flow.

摘要:
Recently an article has appeared describing a new style ionization gauge. The ionization gauge circuit which is here described was designed for use with it and combines the advantages of high sensitivity, stability, and ruggedness required for industrial use. These advantages are achieved through the use of a balanced amplifier, negative feedback and gas tube voltage regulation.

摘要:
The theory discussed in earlier papers regarding the essential characteristics of generators for parallel line measurements at ultra‐high frequencies has been applied to design a simple circuit for oscillators using tubes, such as the 1020Y, in which the electrodes are themselves open‐end sections of a parallel line. The new circuit permits coupling to a Lecher system in a manner which is geometrically both short and close, but electrically loose. The frequency of the oscillator described is continuously variable from 100 to 1000 megacycles.
