摘要:
A tunnel diode oscillator is described which has been successfully used for paramagnetic susceptibility measurements at frequencies from 3 to 55 MHz, at temperatures from 1.2 to 77 K, and at magnetic fields up to 18 kG. In appropriate cases, such measurements may be used to infer magnetic specific heats and spin‐lattice relaxation times.

摘要:
In the following, an account of the research and development for a new technique of pressure measurement in fluid flow is given. Performances of various pressure transducers using conductive rubber as the sensing element have been investigated. Transducers believed to be the smallest of their kind have been manufactured, with sensitivity high enough to record ordinary speech level pressure variations (about 60 dB) in the af range.

摘要:
A magnetic solenoid electron transporter has been constructed to investigate conversion electrons produced in a target by the bombardment of heavy‐ion beams. It measures 32 cm in diameter, 124 cm in length, and weighs approximately 290 kg. The target is located at the center of the magnet so that the emitted electrons can be transported toward either end and their energies measured in Si(Li) counters. The energy resolution (for the 624 keV line of137Cs) and the over‐all detection efficiency (for the energy range between 500 and 1200 keV) have been determined to be 6.9±0.2 keV and 6.0±0.4% for a 110 mm2counter, and 22.0±0.9 keV and 16.0±1.1% for a 500 mm2counter. This distortion of the energy spectrum for the same energy range is less than 7%.

Qualitative analysis is performed by comparing unknown spark source spectra with reference spectra made from mixtures of metal oxides and salts with graphite. Quantitative evaluation is accomplished with a densitometer and added equipment that allows the analyst to choose any one of six methods of data treatment. The maximum blackening of the spectral line can be determined in terms of %T, 1−T, orI(ion density); or the line can be scanned while the blackening is integrated in terms of∫%T, ∫(1−T), or∫I. All measurements are read out in digital form. A method of internal system check, correction, and adjustment is described.

A flexible mounting device for making silver chloride seals is described. With this device, special surface treatments are not required prior to the sealing process. The mounting is especially effective for making seals of irregularly shaped objects and may be applied to sealing problems which involve physical changes of materials during oven baking.

This paper reviews the characteristics of a high pressure ionization gauge originally reported by Schulz and Phelps [Rev. Sci. Instrum.28, 1051 (1957)]. The gauge is available commercially as the Westinghouse WL‐7903. A brief theoretical treatment is given for the linear regime,p≲1 Torr. The gauge sensitivity is derived from known ionization cross sections for a number of atomic and molecular gases, including argon, krypton, and xenon. Also, an improved gauge controller circuit is described. For a given gas the controller normalizes the gauge sensitivity to unity and provides a direct reading of gas pressure on a linear scale. The controller has proved very useful in the operation of a cw flowing‐gas laser in which 0.1 to 300 mTorr pressures occur. In addition, new experimental data are presented for argon, krypton, nitrogen, and air in the ``nonlinear'' range 2–500 Torr.

摘要:
An inexpensive device is described for producing uniform liquid drops which are colinear in trajectory. The device uses both an electrically induced dripping mode and a harmonic electrical spraying mode to achieve continuously variable drop diameters over a 20 to 1 range. Because the drops are uniformly charged (∼10−10C), their velocity and trajectory can be readily varied using inexpensive electrical means.

摘要:
Serious difficulties encountered with a vibrating sample magnetometer in an Nb3Sn ribbon wound superconducting solenoid are described. A useful sensitivity of 10−4emu was achieved, but absolute accuracy was severely limited by unstable magnetic image effects which precluded proper calibration. It is suggested that use of large bore solenoids will overcome the basic difficulties.
