摘要:
After the installation of the portico in MP 7, the behavior of the machine exhibited some difficulties. In this paper, the main differences between MP 7 and MP 10 are analyzed, especially the effect of the different sizes and configurations of the terminal electrodes. In addition, some other differences are discussed, for example, the fact that MP 7 has additional column spark gaps with smaller openings than those used in MP 10.

摘要:
The status of the University of Rochester tandem Van de Graaff accelerator upgrade is reviewed. The accelerator upgrade to 18 MV consists of extended tubes, shielded resistors, dead‐section ion pumping, two rotating insulating power shaft systems to provide power to the dead sections and terminal, and a pelletron charging system to replace the charging belt. Control of many of the accelerator operating systems will be done by two IBM personal computers. The negative ion injector diffusion pump, isolation transformer, preacceleration high‐voltage power supply, and high‐voltage corona enclosure will all be replaced. Finally, the SF6gas handling system will be improved with the addition of a second set of gas dryers and a larger recirculating pump.

摘要:
Beam from the accelerator for research was available for a total period of 3900 h last year and unscheduled maintenance time was reduced by a factor of almost 2. An arc discharge tube conditioning test was conducted on the top five units of the accelerator and a test with macropulsed beam was accomplished. The main problems during the year were vacuum leaks and voltage ‘‘tics.’’

Cracks in ceramic components of NEC column posts pose a serious threat to the 14UD in Canberra. The failed posts have been examined with a view toward identifying the probable cause of puncture and deciding a strategy to contain the problem.

The Yale MP tandem accelerator was closed down on May 22, 1985, to begin the actual conversion process. The new accelerator pressure vessel (98 ft in length and 25 ft in diameter) was moved into the building on November 22, 1985. The new accelerator is projected to be operational at a terminal potential of 20 MV by October 1, 1986.

A new belt material has been tested and installed in our HVEC‐CN‐type Van de Graaff with very good results. The accelerator has been running with this belt for several months up to design voltage of 6 MV. So far no indication of deterioration of the belt has been observed.

摘要:
The construction of the ATLAS superconducting heavy‐ion linear accelerator is complete. The first beam acceleration occurred on March 22, 1985. The first experiment with the ATLAS linac took place during the week of October 7, 1985. The project was completed on time and within budget. Initial system performance has met our expectations.
