SummaryTHEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN CROSS‐NATIONAL RESEARCHThe objectives of this paper are threefold. First, it traces briefly the use of the comparative method in sociology. It documents that what is currently called ‘cross‐national research’ is an interest that has antecedents running back for at least a century in a great variety of fields.Secondly, the paper argues for a closer interplay between sociological theory construction and cross‐national data. Because current sociological theory is exceedingly culture‐bound, basing its propositions largely on data derived from modern American and Western European societies, the need for testing hypotheses within truly cross‐cultural settings is most timely and urgent.Thirdly, the paper delineates three major methodological problems in cross‐national research. These problems include (1) the requirement of equivalence of meaning, (2) the requirement of concept equivalence, and (3) the requirement of equivalence of cultural variability. It concludes with a recommendation for furthering interest in cross‐national research in rural sociology.RésuméPROBLÈMES THÉORIQUES ET MÉTHODOLOGIQUES DE LA RECHERCHE INTERNATIONALECet article a un triple objectif. En premier lieu, il retrace brìevement l'utilisation fake, en sociologie, de la méthode comparative. Il montre que ce qui est couramment appelé«recherche internationale» a des antécédents qui remontent, au moins, à un siècle et ceci dans un grand nombre de domaines. L'article plaide, en second lieu, pour une interaction plus étroite entre l'élaboration de la théorie sociologique et les conditions internationales. La théorie sociologique courante est liée, en grande mesure, à la culture; ses propositions sont très largement fondées sur les conditions propres aux sociétés de l'Europe Occidentale et de l'Amérique du Nord. Aussi, le besoin de tester les hypothèses dans un contexte réellement inter‐culturel est‐il opportun et urgent. En troisième lieu, l'article délimite trois problèmes méthodologiques essentiels pour la recherche internationale. Ces exigences sont respectivement l'équivalence des significations, l'équivalence des concepts et celle de la variabilité culturelle. Cet article conclut par une recommandation en vue du développement de la recherche internationale.ZusammenfassungTHEORETISCHE UND METHODISCHE PROBLEME DER INTERNATIONAL VERGLEICHENDEN FORSCHUNGDer Beitrag befasst sich mit drei Grundproblemen der interkulturellen Forschung. Im ersten Abschnitt wird kurz die Anwendung der komparativen Methode in der Soziologie historisch umrissen. Was heute im allgemeinen als interkulturelle Forschung bezeichnet wird, hat Vorläufer, die mehr als hundert Jahre zurückgehen, und wurde auf vielen Wissensgebieten geub̈t.Im zweiten Abschnitt stent die Interdependenz von Theoriebildung und interkultureller Forschung im Vordergrund. Die gegenwärtige Soziologie ist stark kulturgebunden; d.h. sie stützt ihre Thesen vorwiegend auf Daten, die amerikanischen und westeuropäischen Gesellschaftssystemen entstammen. Die theoretische Notwendigkeit, fruchtbare Hypothesen innerhalb verschiedener Gesellschaftssysteme zu überprüfen, kann nicht genug hervorgehoben werden.Der letzte Abschnitt setzt sich kritisch mit methodologischen Problemen der interkulturellen Forschung auseinander. Diese Probleme schliessen ein: Die Bedingungen der Bedeutungsäquivalenz, der Begriffsäquivalenz sowie der Äquivalenz kultureller Variabilität. Der Beitrag schliesst mit einer Anregung

SummaryFACTORS INFLUENCING OPTIMUM SIZE AND DECISION‐MAKING IN CO‐OPERATIVE FARMSThe dualistic character of co‐operation as an economic and a social phenomenon leads to different measurements of its individual features and to a compromise as practical solution. Large size in co‐operatives leads to economies of scale, but diseconomies may result through high costs of administration and alienation occurring at a smaller size than in industry. Small size, on the other hand, has the inconvenience of social immobility. Optimum size — both economically and socially — depends on many factors and cannot be fixed once and for all. A categorization of agricultural co‐operatives according to their degree of integration shows no rigid delimitation between service and farming co‐operation, but rather a smooth transition and a wide choice of closely related types. Co‐operation implies a gain of security against a loss of formal freedom in decision‐making.The individual farmer has only limited and decreasing space for decision‐making. In farming co‐operatives, decision‐making depends upon economic type, integration, Government planning, members' abilities and activity, and the efficiency of the democratic set‐up. Members' active participation promotes the co‐operative and enriches the member's life, thereby furthering fuller identification. This can only be achieved if the needs and wishes of the co‐operators are considered as much as possible, i.e if Government interference is restricted to the necessary minimum.RésuméTAILLE OPTIMUM DES EXPLOITATIONS AGRICOLES COOPÉRATIVES ET PRISE DE DÉCISION: FACTEURS DÉTERMINANTSLe caractère dualiste de la cooperation en tant que phénomène économique et social implique des mesures différenciées de chacun de ces traits et conduit dans la pratique à un compromis. La grande dimension de ces coopératives entraine des économies d'échelle, mais aussi des déséconomies par l'intermédiaire des coûts de fonctionnement, de meme qu'une certaine aliénation, facteurs connus dans l'industrie mais travaillant dans l'agriculture déjà sur une échelle moindre. Une taille plus restreinte présente, par ailleurs, un lourd handicap d'immobilité sociale. La taille optimale, tant du point devue économique que social, dépend de nombreux facteurs et ne peut être déterminée vine fois pour toutes.Une catégorisation des coopératives agricoles en function de leur degré d'intégration montre qu'il n'existe pas dédelimitation stricte entre la coopération de production et celle de service, mais plutôt une transition régulière et un grand éventail de types étroitement reliés. La cooperation implique un gain de sécurité compensant la perte de la liberté, surtout formelle, de décision.La sphére de décisions de l'exploitant individuel est également limitée et va décroissant. Dans les fermes coopératives, la prise de décision dépend du type économique, du degré d'intégration, de la planification gouvernementale, de la compétence et de la participation des adhérents, de l'efficacité de la structure démocratique. — Une participation active des adhérents aide au développement de la coopérative et enrichit la vie de ses membres, favorisant ainsi une plus grande identification. Ceci ne peut être menéà bien que s'il est tenu compte, dans toute la mesure du possible, des besoins et des souhaits des coopérateurs et si les interventions gouvernementales se réduisent au stricte minimum.ZusammenfassungFAKTOREN OPTIMALER BETRIEBSGRÖßE UND DES ENTSCHEIDUNGSPROZESSES IN GENOSSENSCHAFTSFARMNDer dualistische Charakter der Genossenschaften als eines ökonomischen und eines sozialen Phänomens führt zu unterschiedlichen Maß‐stäben für ihre einzelnen Merkmale und zu einem Kompromiss bei den praktischen Lösungen. Größere Ausmaße der Genossenschaften ergeben Betriebsgrößenvorteile, aber auch —nachteile wegen des Verwaltungsaufwands und der Entfremdung, und das bereits bei einer niedrigeren GröBenordnung als in der Industrie. Geringe Betriebsgröße andererseits hat den wesentlichen Nachteil sozialer Immobilität. Die optimale Größe —ökonomisch und sozial — hängt von vielen Faktoren ab und kann nicht ein für alle mal festgelegt werden. Kategorisiert man die landwirtschaftlichen Genossenschaften nach dem Grad der Integration, so besteht keine starre Abgrenzung zwischen Dienstleistungs‐ und Produktionsgenossenschaften, vielmehr ein allmählicher Übergang und ein weites Spektrum eng verwandter Typen. — Genossenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit bedeutet einen Gewinn von Sicherheit auf Kosten eines Verlustes an formaler Entscheidungsfreiheit.Auch der selbständige Bauer hat nur einen begrenzten und schrumpfenden Raum für eigene Entscheidungen. In Produktionsgenossenschaften hängt der Entscheidungsprozess von folgenden Faktoren ab: Wirtschaftsbetrieb, Integration, staatliche Planung, Fähigkeiten und Aktivität der Mitglieder, Effizienz der demokratischen Struktur. Die aktive Teilnahme der Mitglieder fördert die Genossenschaft und bereichert das Leben der Mitglieder und führt damit zu stärkerer Identifikation. SummaryTHE TRANSFORMATION OF FAMILY STRUCTURE AND THE AGRICULTURAL CO‐OPERATIVESThe ‘co‐operativisation’ of farming radically transforms rural structures, be it the economic structure of public life, or of the internal structures of the peasant family. The author's studies, at different stages, of the processes of co‐perativisation in Rumania have yielded a set of observations concerning the direct relationship of agrarian and family structures. Important changes have occurred in the status and role of members of the peasant family. By joining the co‐operative, the peasant family ceases to form an autonomous economic unit of production. A gap appears between the role of the head of the family and that of farm manager. The affective dependence of family members is no longer one of professional subordination. The ladder of undifferentiated roles within the family (head of family = head of enterprise, son = apprentice, family member = associate and similarly unpaid worker) is disturbed, becomes controversial and is transformed. Thus, a process — slightly visible, but not less real — is initiated of slow modification of the status of family head, eroding his authority and lessening the dependence of the other members. The relationship between the generations in the peasant family is modified. In the co‐operative, the young acquire autonomy and free initiative much earlier. The traditional means for pressure by the older generation — inheritance of the land — lose their force. Relations between the children are much less prone to conflict and competition. The right of the first‐born, or the tradition of the youngest son staying at home, lose most of their former impact on normal family relations. New families are based on different criteria, influencing the future status of the couple. These transformations, however, do not materialize equally, homogeneously and simultaneously in all families. Furthermore, they depend upon additional conditions: the strength of traditions, the degree of education, on geographical area, etc.RésuméLA TRANSFORMATION DES STRUCTURES FAMILIALES ET LES COOPÉRATIVES AGRICOLESEn entrant dans la coopérative, la famille paysanne cesse d'être, simultanément, une unitééconomique autonome de production, comme c'était le cas auparavant. Une coupure se produit entre le rÔle de chef de famille et celui de chef d'exploitation. La dépendanceaffectivedes membres de la famille a l'égard du chef de famille cesse d'être aussi une subordinationprofessionnelle.L'échafaudage des rôles non différenciés à l'intérieur de la famille (chef de famille = chef d'entreprise, fils = apprenti, membre de la famille = associé et, en même temps, travailleur non‐salarié), se trouve bousculé, mis en cause, transformé. Ainsi, s'enclenche un processus, peu visible, mais cependant réel, de lente modification du statut du chef de famille, d'érosion de son autorité et d'affaiblissement de la dépendance des autres membres.Les relations entre générations dans la famille paysanne se modifient. En effet, dans la coopérative, les jeunes accèdent plus tôt à l'autonomie et à la liberté d'initiative. L'instrument traditionnel de pression des générations âgées sur les jeunes — I'héritage de la terre — manque désormais d'objet. Les relations entre les enfants de la famille paysanne sont beaucoup moins conflictuelles et concurrentielles. Le droit d'aînesse ou la tradition selon laquelle le cadet devait rester dans la maison ont considérablement perdu de leur vieille importance dans les rapports familiaux usuels. La création de nouvelles families se fonde sur des critères relativement différents qui influencent le futur statut des conjoints. Soulignons toutefois que ces transformations ne se produisent pas de manière égale, homogène et simultanée dans toutes les families; elles dépendant également d'autres circonstances: force des traditions, degré d'instruction, zone géographique, etc.ZusammenfassungVERÄNDERUNGEN DER FAMILIENSTRUKTUREN UND DIE LAND WIRTSCHAFTLI CHEN GENOSSENSCHAFTENDie Vergenossenschaftlichung der Landwirtschaft verändert radikal die ländlichen Strukturen, die ökonomischen Strukturen, das öfFentliche Leben und ebenso die internen Strukturen der bäuerlichen Familie. Die Studien, die der Verfasser in verschiedenen Phasen des Prozesses der Genossenschaftsbildung in Rumänien durchgeführt hat, haben eine Reihe Erkenntnisse über die direkte Beziehung ermöglicht, die zwischen den Agrarstrukturen und den Familienstrukturen besteht. Man hat deutlich wesentliche Veränderungen in dem Status und der Rolle der Mitglieder der bäauerlichen Familie feststellen können.Mit dem Eintritt in die Genossenschaft hört die bäuerliche Familie gleichzeitig auf, eine autonome wirtschafdiche Produktionseinheit zu sein. Eine Kluft ergibt sich zwischen der Rolle des Familienoberhauptes und der des Betriebsleiters. Die affektive Abhängigkeit der Familienmitglieder ist nicht mehr gleichzeitig eine berufliche Unterordnung. Die Verteilung der nichtdifferenzierten Rollen im Innern der Familie (Familienoberhaupt = Betriebsleiter, Sohn = Lending, Familienmitglied = Assoziierter — gleichzeitig nichtbezahlter Arbeiter) wird umgestossen und transformiert. So entwickelt sich ein wenig sichtbarer, aber doch sehr realer Prozess, der zu einer allmählichen Veranderung des Status des Familienoberhauptes führt, zur Erosion seiner Autorität und zur Schwächuhg der Abhängigkeit der anderen.Die Beziehungen zwischen den Generationen in der bäuerlichen Familie werden modifiziert. Im Ergebnis erreichen in der Genossenschaft die jungen Menschen eher die Autonomic und die Freiheit der Initiative. Das traditionelle Druckinstrument der älteren Generation auf die jungen Menschen — die Vererbung des Bodens — wird nunmehr gegenstandslos. Die Beziehungen zwischen den Kindern der Bauernfamilie führen viel weniger zu Konflikten und Konkurrenz. Das Erstgeburtsrecht oder die Tradition, nach der der Jüngste zu Hause bleiben muß, hat viel von ihrer alten Bedeutung in den normalen Familienbeziehungen verloren. Die Bildung neuer Familien gründet sich auf andere Kriterien, die die zukunftige Position der Ehepartner beeinflussen. SummaryThe opportunities for a young man to become a farmer nowadays are severely restricted, so that many aspiring farmers, including farmers' sons, will be obliged to enter different occupations. The survey described here investigates the job aspirations of schoolboys and youths coming from a predominantly agricultural district in eastern England, against the background of the large amount of research already carried out in this field by American rural sociologists. Boys hoping to make a career in farming were compared with others in respect of the occupational choice process, educational aspirations, reference groups and career values. On the whole the results follow the American findings. The farm‐choice boys showed themselves to be already oriented towards the role of farmer. Such attitudes would make any subsequent transfer to other occupations more difficult and this emphasizes the need for further training for aspiring farmers.RésuméLE CHOIX DB LA PROFESSION AGRICOLELes chances qu'a, aujourd'hui, un jeune homme de devenir exploitant agricole sont très restreintes; aussi, de nombreux aspirants à ce métieret parmi eux de nombreux fils d'exploitants‐sontils obligës de choisir d'autres métiers. L'enquête décrite içi avait pour objet de rendre compte des aspirations professionnelles des écoliers et étudiants originaires d'une zone spécifiquement agricole de l'Est de l'Angleterre. Les hypothèses de base de cette étude étaient constitueés par l'ensemble des recherches entreprises en ce domaine par les sociologues ruraux américains. Les garçons qui souhaitaient faire de l'agriculture leur métier furent comparés aux autres quant au processus de leur choix, leurs aspirations en matière d'éducation, leurs groupes de référence, les qualités attribuées aux diverses carrières. Les résultats corroborent, dans l'ensemble, les données américaines. Les garçons qui souhaitent devenir agriculteurs se montrent, dès à présent, prêts à assumer le rôle d'exploitant. De telles attitudes rendront tout transfert vers une autre profession plus difficile et mettent l'accent sur le besoin d'une formation plus poussée des aspirants agriculteurs.ZusammenfassungDIE WAHL DER LANDWIRTSCHAFT ALS BERUFDie Möglichkeiten f̈ur junge Menschen, Landwirte zu werden, sind heutzutage eng begrenzt, so daß viele, die Landwirte werden wollen, einschließlich Söhnen von Landwirten gezwungen sind, andere Berufe zu ergreifen. Die Untersuchung, über die bier berichtet wird, behandelt die Berufswünsche von Schuljungen und Jugendlichen aus einem vorwiegend landwirtschaftlichen Distrikt. Die Befragung wurde im östlichen England auf der Grundlage der vielen Forschungen amerikanischer ländlicher Soziologen auf diesem Gebiet durchgeführt. Jungen, die in der Landwirtschaft ihr Fortkommen suchen wollen, wurden mit anderen hinsichtlich des Prozesses der Berufswahl, der Erziehungswünsche, der Vergleichsgruppen und der Berufswertvorstellungen verglichen. Im ganzen folgen die Ergebnisse den amerikanischen Erkenntnissen. Die Jungen, die die Landwirtschaft wählten, waren bereits auf die Rolle des Landwirts orientiert.
