SUMMARYThis article presents a critical review of recent organizational change in the GDR's rural society, including the formation of specialized production co‐operatives and a more intensive vertical integration in the agro‐industrial complex. This more centralised, bureaucratic structure is explained in relation to the historical development of the mode of production, particular immediate problems and the ideological orientation of the leadership. In opposition to the harmonious, functionalist interpretation of GDR authors, it is suggested here that most contemporary developments serve to expand the bureaucracy, are likely to increase alienation and thus to deepen contradictions in the rural sector, despite certain real material achievements which are outlined.RéuméCette étude présente un examen critique du changement récent des organisations dans la societé rurale de la RDA, y compris la formation des coopératives specialisées de production et l'intégration verticale plus intense du complexe agro‐industriel.
SUMMARYSince the achievement of independence, Israel's rural settlement cooperatives have responded to changing environmental and internal conditions through adaptive reactions aimed at defending cooperatives' public standing and satisfying new emphases in members' expectations. Economic diversification through industrialization has been one of the most important of these reactions. Recently it has been suggested to supplement the industrialization of existing forms of rural settlement cooperative by founding “industrial villages”. A number of issues must be resolved if this new type of cooperative is to take root, including: (1) design of the form of ownership of village enterprises and the system of remuneration of members working in them; (2) determination of the size of settlements and the level of cooperative organization of economic and municipal functions; (3) resolution of competition over resources among groups of settlement candidates of differing socioeconomic background; (4) integration of industrial villages within the network of settlement movements; (5) and resolution of the problem of non‐member wage labor in cooperative enterprises.RésuméDepuis l'obtention de l'indépendance, les villages coopératifs ruraux en Israël ont réagi aux changements des conditions environnantes et internes par l'adaptation destinée à protéger le statut social de ces villages et à répondre à de nouvelles orientations en ce qui concerne les attentes de ses membres.

SUMMARYThis article analyzes recent changes in Sardinia in terms of the concept of involution. Involution refers to a process of change in which there is continuous elaboration within a pattern, while the pattern itself remains fixed. Involutionary processes within Sardinian agriculture, commerce, and the government bureaucracies are systematically analyzed. Thus, for example, traditional agricultural patterns have been increasingly elaborated, small scale commerce has multiplied in a duplicative fashion, and the bureaucracies have grown by sub‐dividing tasks and adding personnel. Hence, although Sardinia is within the orbit of industrial centers, it has itself not become “industrial” but rather continues to be a marginal, involuted region.
