AbstractIn this article two different patterns of farming logic are analysed. Farming consists in practice of a range of different tasks coordinated in a coherent way and, at the same time, oriented towards the specific goals of the farmer. This coordination and goal‐orientation are structured by a logical pattern. Contrary to familiar presuppositions, it can be demonstrated that within one homogeneous environment, different patterns of farming logic are used, resulting in contrasting styles of farming. Special attention is given to the structural patterns of dependency and autonomy (reflected in specific schemes of reproduction) that link farming to the economic‐institutional environment. Statistical analysis of data from North Italian dairy farming shows some interesting linkages between patterns of farming logic and the dependency on the external environment.RésuméCet article étudie deux modèles differents de logique agricole.

AbstractThe overall concern of this essay is with the ways in which processes of capitalist development have shaped the existence and transformation of the family farm and rural life. This theme is explored comparatively through an analysis of the rise and decline of mutual aid between farm households in the Far North of New Zealand and on the Canadian Prairies. The historic importance of mutual aid and its declining significance is interpreted in terms of its relevance to the reproduction of relations of production of the family farm. Consequently, it is suggested that while veiled by the idiom of neighbourliness, mutual aid involved obligations to reciprocate which were conditioned by the imperatives of reproduction. Such an analysis is a necessary step towards unravelling the complexity of rural social structure and demystifying our often Arcadian imagery of the family farm and its community.

AbstractThe paper examines aspects of social change in village England, conditioned by processes of industrial and occupational transformation. In the first part, the findings of various Census studies on migration streams, industrial and employment change are summarised. These point to the widespread decentralisation of both population and economic activity ‐ away from the metropolitan cores‐ throughout Britain. Important local variations are commented upon. From theories of capitalist restructuring, it is argued that the national relocation of employment has had an impact on the rural localities, effectively recomposing these places within a number of spatial divisions of labour. The second part involves an examination of the structure and social divisions of labour markets available to rural residents, using comparative data from five localities. Processes operating to increasingly differentiate and specialise particular markets for labour power are evident. The paper concludes with a typology of differentiated labour markets ‐ to be used as the basis for future research ‐together with some comments on the study of the class structure of ‘rural society“.ResumeCet article détaille quelques aspects du changement social de ľAngleterre rurale, en fonction des transformations de ľindustrie et du marché de ľemploi.

AbstractGroup farming is an approach to aquacultural development where a relatively small number of individuals or families elect to produce fish as a collectively adopted activity. Cooperatively managed farm enterprises depend on various coordination mechanisms to initiate and sustain the production process. The paper examines selected structural and situational factors that affect decision making and continued operation of community‐managed fish ponds. Specific reference is made to a 22‐community rural development project in central Panama where ponds were constructed, extension assistance imparted, and aquacuhure is integrated with garden and animal enterprises. Community factionalism, property rights, sums differences, and the role of leadership are examined in terms of the viability of group farming and the long‐term sustainability of community‐managed enterprises.RésuméĽarticle pone sur un essai de développement de ľaquaculture par une formule coopérative dans laquelle un petit nombre ?individus ou de families s'associent pour la production.
