SummaryA small number of studies have examined aspects of return migration in an international context. Till now, work on internal return migration has largely consisted of parts of studies dealing primarily with some other aspect of migration. On the basis of population register data and migration notifications, this study examines return migration to a marginal area which is experiencing a net migration loss. It explores differences between emigrants and return migrants in age at emigration, occupations in the home area and elsewhere and migration, destination. On the basis of the findings, tentative explanations are suggested for the differences between migrants in propensity to return.

SummaryEvidence from a small settlement in Tuscany suggests that even where people have face‐to‐face contact across a range of social contexts, the allocation of prestige and of leadership roles in voluntary associations may be made with relatively impersonal criteria. This is not what Wirth's argument, as modified by Dewey, would lead one to expect.

SummaryThe concepts commonly used in discussing farm management process are defined and the process itself is conceptualized as being not one, but two processes; the goal‐achievement process and the problemsolving process. These two processes are closely interdependant and inter‐woven. The two processes differ because they have different starting points and ending points but, more importantly, to complete them requires different abilities of the farm manager. Problem solving involves conceptualizing abstract analytical models and understanding and manipulating knowledge on abstract variables, whilst the goal‐achievement process deals with concrete variables within particular subject‐matter areas. A comparative analysis of both processes with Bloom's (1956) hierarchy of educational objectives indicates that each process is an educational one requiring increasing abilities with each successive step.Goals and problems are each positioned in a space defined by three continua; for goals, from non‐critical to critical, easy to attain to difficult to attain and routine to unusual; and for problems, from non‐critical to critical, simple to complex and familiar to unfamiliar. Critical problems and goals are classified according to their reasons for being critical. This defines the management situation of the farmer at any point in time.Implications of the model are drawn for future farm management research.

SummaryStarting from a critique of pragmatically‐oriented rural sociology, the most important approaches to rural occupational mobility are reviewed and discussed in a quasi‐historical framework. Two aspects are emphasized; first, change in the statement of questions and second, increasing integration of results into existing knowledge of rural sociology. The critique of studies of migration from rural areas leads to a synthetic approach for investigating rural occupational mobility. Its framework consists of the theory of social behaviour developed by Opp and its core is the modified theory of cognitive dissonance of Festinger. Integration of structural, motivational and specific personality variables in a combined approach ought to help us discover the reasons for mobility or immobility of self employed farmers.
