SummaryINTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND THE DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONSMost studies have found that opinion leaders have a higher level of adoption of new farm practices, more contact with competent sources of farm information, and more contacts outside their village than their followers. This is especially true in communities with group norms favourable towards the adoption of innovations and in some communities in developing countries. In the analysis of sociometric dyads several studies have found that on instrumental questions farmers are chosen with a higher level of technological competence, whereas on sociable questions such differences are relatively small. The way in which farmers influence each other and the effects of the patron‐client relationship on the adoption of new farm practices are neglected research topics.Differences between villages in the effect of personal influence on the adoption of new farm practices can be caused by differences in group norms, specialisation and concentration in opinion leadership, and in mutual confidence among the villagers. The two‐step flow of communication hypothesis probably needs revision.

SummaryTHE ROLE OF THE SOCIOLOGIST IN RURAL DEVELOPMENTThis paper discusses the contribution of the sociologist to the planning of agricultural and rural development in Israel. The author first outlines the three levels of agricultural planning – national, regional and farm, and then provides some background to rural settlement activities in Israel. The confrontation of new immigrants from traditional societies with the technologically advanced agriculture of Israel resulted in severe social crises in the new villages, affecting also their economic achievements; and the subsequent assignment of rural sociologists to the villages to study the life‐pattern of these traditional groups and provide them with counselling and instruction, whilst at the same time undertaking general research. The recommendations of the sociologists helped the development authorities to evolve suitable measures for integrating these immigrants into society as socially independent and economically successful members.RésuméROLE DU SOCIOLOGUE DANS LE DEVELOPPEMENT RURALCet article a pour thème la contribution du sociologue à la planification du développement rural et agricole en Israel.

SummaryAPPLICATION OF SOCIOLOGICAL AND SOCIO‐PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN EXTENSION EDUCATIONExtension work is understood as a helping relationship to aid people in changing their outlooks, attitudes, knowledge and behaviour in such a way, that as many of their agricultural problems are solved as is possible and their overall situation is improved. For their work change‐agents need concepts which should provide: Insight into the inter‐relatedness of basic factors determining behaviour and indications as to leverage points for change within the complex of interdependent factors. Field theory has proved to be a very useful concept in this respect. It serves as an heuristic tool to discover the factors and their interrelationships which are relevant in respect to behaviour in specific situations. On a macro‐level it seems helpful to combine this concept with an inter‐system model leading to the analysis of interaction within and between the client‐system and the change‐agent system.Training in conceptual skills to use the concepts in actual development work should not be limited to the presentation of the concept or the respective concepts. Even the training of field advisers to use these concepts in actual planning situations does not seem to be sufficient. The training should correct psychological and sociological assumptions held by the advisers which lead to disfunctional activities. The aim is to attain from the advisers a positive acceptance of the approach as well as some degree of committment to its application in the field.Only a small number of empirical research studies is available relating to the problem of how to bring about change by extension/ advisory‐type of activities. There is a real need for more action oriented research in this field.
