SummaryThe “real community” is treated as one which is defined by and is generative of a distinctive culture which guides and informs the behaviour of its members. The argument here is that in order to discover and reveal the reality of community, the ethnographer's methodic devices must be congruent with the cognitive modes through which members perceive and construct their community. The ethnographic warrant for such grounded method lies in the central and ideological importance to such communities of their distinctiveness. The failure to recognise and accomodate methodologically the cultural integrity ‐the reality ‐ of the community would thus result in the misrepresentation of the field and the misunderstanding of the behaviour which it encompasses. With illustrations drawn from the author's current research in Whalsay, Shetland, the discussion moves to an examination of the methodic means through which the ethnographer may assimilate members' cognitive and idiomatic constructions of their community. It addresses the problem of acquiring a sense of the cultural whole, showing again that the delineation of its investigable parts should follow from indigenous modes of defining the society, and the forms of social association which are thus generated. Accounts of peat‐cutting, social drinking and styles of identity in Whalsay are used to demonstrate the reality of the communal milieu by suggesting that aspects of behaviour in the community are misunderstood unless seen as integral parts of a coherent and self‐consciously distinctive cultural entity.RésuméLa «société réelle» est traitée comme étant définie par ‐ et simultané‐ment comme définissant ‐ une culture spécifique, laquelle dirige et explique le comportement de ses membres.

SummaryIn a peasant community where access to land is vital for livelihood, the amount of land to which each household has access is a major influence on its size and composition. The paper develops this idea by means of a model derived from neoclassical economics. The model provides a framework for showing the relevance not only of land, but also technology, intensity of cultivation, urban labour market, and other ‘economic’ variables, as well as ‘kinship’ variables such as norms of inheritance.

SummaryGeneral and especially infrastructure has two functions:‐ to improve the development chances of underdeveloped regions and‐ to improve the supply situation of the population. In this article mainly the second function has been discussed. It shows that the infrastructural level in rural regions has increased during the last twenty years in the Federal Republic of Germany. But infrastructural differences between rural and urban regions are existing now as they existed before. This disparity in regional prosperity is affected by the different settlement structure in rural and urban regions and in the different central places network. Because of the predominance of villages and hamlets as well as the absence of greater poles of development and the low population density in rural regions, many public utilities cannot be utilizes rationally, and necessaries of life cannot be fulfilled well. The bad supply situation with public utilities and the worse social chances in rural regions have been recognized by the rural population. The demands on the infrastructural level have increased. Mainly leisure‐time‐ and cultural equipments, traffic infrastructure and educational equipments are wanted by the people. But these wishes are exceeding the bounds of economic, demographic and financial possibilities. Economic growth and population are decreasing in the Federal Republic of Germany and public finances are scarce. So infrastructural disparities will exist also in future. Because of the mentionned facts the improvement of infrastructure in rural regions must be concentrated in a few poles only. In order to improve the supply situation in remote rural regins the “space‐time‐relations” must be shortened. This means that the most important point of improvement is the improvement of the traffic system.RésuméL'infrastructure a en général et aussi en particulier pour des régions rurales à remplir une double fonction.
