Zusammenfassung1. SummaryImmune‐complex diseases in man and animals1. In certain infectious diseases the clinical signs and changes in organs are not due to the direct effects of the infectious agent. After deposition or local formation of pathogenic immune complexes there develop in a series of target organs characteristic inflammatory processes; an immune complex disease develops.2. From numerous observations of spontaneous diseases as well as experimental studies it is possible to explain which factors are responsible for the development, biological effects, elimination and localization of immune complexes in the tissues. The most important factors responsible for determining the pathogenicity of immune complexes are the nature of the antigen, class and sub‐class of immunoglobulin, molar relationship between antigen and antibody, rate of production and availability of both immune reactants, and the functional state of the reticulo‐endothelial system. In addition, genetic factors may be important since they determine the amount of antibody produced as well as its affinity for the antigen.3. The pathogenic, especially the inflammation‐stimulating action, of immune complexes rests on their ability to activate the complement system i. e. the formation of biologically active complement breakdown products; to react with Fc‐receptors on thrombocytes, neutrophil and eosinophil granulocytes and macrophages; and also to activate mediators of the kinin system.4. The localization of circulating immune complexes in tissues is determined by the size of the immune complex, the molar relations between antigen and antibody, the haemodynamic relationships in the area of deposition, the local increase in vascular permeability caused by vaso‐active mediators, and, in the case of the kidney, by the presence of C 3 b‐receptors in the glomeruli. Immune complexes have some significance as regulators of cell‐mediated and humoral responses since they can react with cells which carry Fc and C receptors and can sometimes increase and at other times reduce the immune response.5. Circulating immune complexes have a pathogenic effect after deposition in certain target organs such as renal glomeruli, vessel walls, choroid plexus, synovial membranes and skin, as well as after activation of humoral and cellular mediators. The reasons for the continuing persistence of immune complexes in the circulation are deficient elimination by the monocyte‐macrophage system, lack of certain complement factors, an antigen‐antibody relationship unfavourable for phagocytosis, and the degree of antibody affinity; these various reasons are discussed.6. The development of new methods to detect immune complexes in biological fluids and in tissues has resulted in explaining the primary importance of immune complexes in the development of diseases in man and animals. In some diseases the aetiol

SummaryAction potentials and conduction velocities of the Nervus tibialis of sheep paralysed by Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsiNeurophysiological investigations of the exposed Nervus tibialis in normal and paralysed sheep revealed that tick paralysis caused byRhipicephalus evertsi evertsiis mainly a motor polyneuropathy. The amplitudes of nerve action potentials and evoked compound muscle action potentials slowed down by 46.3% and 88.3%, respectively, when the paresis or paralysis became clinically manifest. The conduction velocity of the Nervus tibialis and the maximum motor conduction velocity, however, were only slightly reduced by 21.6% and 20%, respectively, and therefore were still at the lower level of the deviation of normal values.

SummaryDoves proved susceptible to the velogenic viscerotropic Newcastle disease virus, showing nervous symptoms, congestion of the internal organs and shed the virus. The virus was transmitted from doves to susceptible in‐contact chickens and vice versa.Out of 140 faecal swabs collected from free‐flying doves captured from different localities in Egypt, 15 were positive to virus isolation and two blood samples gave high HI titres. The viruses isolated were of the velogenic viscerotropic type. These results suggest that doves in Egypt may play a significant role in the transmission of the disease to chickens.

SummaryChanges in the bacterial flora in various stages of ripening of salamiTwenty samples of salami from two meat product factories were studied at three different stages of ripening ‐ one, three and seven days after filling. There was a marked increase in the bacterial flora (total bacterial count); Gram positive organisms predominated (Staphylococcus, LactobacillusandMicrococcus).Among the Gram negative organisms which decreased with the passage of time were bacteria of theVibrio‐Aeromonas, AcinetobacterandEnterobacteriacaetypes.
SummaryThe anticoccidial activity of lerbek (clopidol/methylbenzoquate), robenidine and salinomycin against hepatic coccidiosis was examined in rabbits. After experimental infection with 5 × 104sporulated oocysts ofEimeria stiedae, 200 ppm lerbek and 50 ppm salinomycin prevented the presence of liver lesions completely, while oocyst output was reduced by 99.9%. At lower levels liver lesions were found in 83.3% of the 100 ppm lerbek medicated rabbits and in 66.7% of 25 ppm salinomycin medicated animals, while feed conversion, weight gain and carcass weight at slaughter were not altered. At 66 ppm, robenidine lacked a distinct action against experimental infection with 5 × 104oocysts ofE. stiedae. At lower infective levels (5 × 103to 2 × 104oocysts) medication with 66 and 99 ppm robenidine influenced feed consumption and carcass weight favourably, whereas hepatomegaly and oocyst output were reduced considerably. At slaughter less than 3 slight liver lesions were found in 53% of the 99 ppm medicated animals. None of the drugs used had a significant effect on the rate of oocyst sporulation.

Tagpost infectionemnicht signifikant ab.SummaryThe occurrence of prenatal and galactogenic infection of mice with Toxascaris leonina LEIPER 1907Investigations were performed to determine whether vertical transmission ofToxascaris leoninaoccurred in mice. To determine whether prenatal transplacental infection occurred, female mice were infected with larvae at varying times before and during gestation and the offspring examined for larvae immediately after birth. To detect postnatal lactogenic infection (i. e. via suckling), tracer offspring from uninfected mothers were suckled on lactating infected mothers and then examined for larvae at predetermined times after sucking. Among the results were the following:1. Transplacental transmission ofToxascaris leoninawas not observed in any of the experiments. In contrast, lactogenic transmission occurred in all sucking experiments, irrespective of when the dams were infected.2. Galactogenic infection of young animals was greatest when the dams were infected before and early in lactation. With increase in time between infection and the start of lactation the galactogenic infection magnitude fell at first distinctly, but then reached a plateau from day 20 to day 160 after infection.3. In dams infected on the day of parturition, up to 30% of the larvae could be recovered from the offspring. Transmission of larvae in the milk was determined to be greatest during the 2nd week of lactation and significantly lower during the 1st and 3rd weeks of lactation.4. Larvae recovered from the offspring were always significantly larger than those recovered from the corresponding mothers upon which they had suckled. The number of larvae fell non‐significantly in non‐gravid adult female mice from day 14 up to day 174 after infection. This investigation has therefore demonstrated that vertical transmission ofToxascaris leoninaonly occurs via the lactogenic route.

SummaryIntratracheal and intranasal infection of 10 weeks old lambs with a local isolate of ovine adenovirus type 1 (Gy/14 strain) resulted in acute respiratory symptoms, followed by chronic pathological processes, mainly of the lungs and kidneys. Clinical signs, pathological lesions and haematological values are described. Virus shedding in the nasal discharge ceased by day 14 p. i. and virus‐neutralizing antibodies in the serum reached their maximal values by the 17th day. Histopathological lesions in the respiratory and renal epithelium persisted for the whole period of the experiment (60–75 days p. i.). Acute lesions reappeared as a result of cortisone treatment, but no virus shedding could be demonstrated.Persistent lesions caused by ovine adenovirus infection call for specific measures to prevent losses due to retarded growth rate and reduced feed conversion in lambs. Tag p. i.

SummaryA simple micromethod for the determination of specific IgG against somatic antigens of bacteria in rabbit immune sera by a modified enzyme‐immunoassayA method is described by which the amount of protein A‐Sepharose‐detectable specific antibodies against bacterial somatic antigens could be determined in rabbit immunsera. It was demonstrated that ultrasonically treated and photometrically standardized material of vegetative cells ofBac. anthraciscould be fixed by slow drying (at least 8 h) at 70—80 °C to the walls of the wells of microtest plates so that it can be used as the stationary phase for an enzyme‐immunoassay.
