摘要:
Canonical variate analysis is used to explore the similarities and differences between a priori soil groups on the basis of laboratory measurements of soil properties and the growth of seedlings in the soils. Canonical correlation is used to relate the growth of the seedlings to the soil properties.

摘要:
A model for media exposure probabilities is developed which has the joint probability of exposure proportional to the product of the marginal probabilities. The model is a generalization of Goodhardt & Ehrenberg's ‘duplication of viewing law’, with the duplication constant computed from a truncated canonical expansion of the joint exposure probability. The proposed model is compared on the basis of estimation accuracy and computation speed with an accurate and quick ‘approximate’ log-linear model (as noted previously)and the popular Metheringham beta-binomial model. Our model is shown to be more accurate than the approximate log-linear model and four times faster. In addition, it is much more accurate than Metheringham's model.

摘要:
The fitting of a straight line that must pass through (0, 0) is a frequently encountered application of linear regression. Many computer packages provide a least-squares option sometimes identified as NO INT, or even NOINT, or as ‘suppressing the intercept’. Often these procedures are invalid or do not correspond to the most suitable model. This paper questions the least-squares-line approach and suggests some alternatives. Two measures are proposed for comparing the fit of alternative models.

摘要:
The application of diagnostic procedures in empirical modelling, raises several practical problems which seem to have received relatively little attention. The aim of this paper is to highlight some of these difficulties and to sketch a possible strategy to isolate the source of an outlier and to decide on appropriate correction action.

摘要:
The ridge regression, as a modification of least squares, is one of the ways of the ways of overcoming multicollinearity of regressors in regression analysis. The central problem in the application of the ridge regression is the choice of the perturbation factor k. The paper compares the performance of some subjective (SM) and objective (OM) methods of selection k in respect of the estimates of the mean squared estimation error (MSEE) and the mean squared prediction error (MSPE). The chosen methods were applied on empirical data which relate to social product and some other relevant factors of agriculture of Yugoslavia and its regions.

摘要:
Approximations of the Bayesian estimators of the survival function based on the censored data of the log-logistic distribution are obtained under squared-error and log-odds squared-error loss functions. A numerical example is presented. Through a Monte Carlo simulation study, the behavior of the approximations found by Tierney & Kadane and Lindley are compared with a method suggested by Weiss & Howlader.

摘要:
In a previous paper, it was demonstrated that distinctly different prediction methods when applied to 2435 American college and professional football games resulted in essentially the same fraction of correct selections of the winning team and essentially the same average absolute error for predicting the margin of victory. These results are now extended to 1446 Australian rules football games. Two distinctly different prediction methods are applied. A least-squares method provides a set of ratings. The predicted margin of victory in the next contest is less than the rating difference, corrected for home-ground advantage, while a 0.75 power method shrinks the ratings compared with those found by the least-squares technique and then performs predictions based on the rating difference and home-ground advantage. Both methods operate upon past margins of victory corrected for home advantage to obtain the ratings. It is shown that both methods perform similarly, based on the fraction of correct selections of the winning team and the average absolute error for predicting the margin of victory. That is, differing predictors using the same information tend to converge to a limiting level of accuracy. The least-squares approach also provides estimates of the accuracy of each prediction. The home advantage is evaluated for all teams collectively and also for individual teams. The data permit comparisons with other sports in other countries. The home team appears to have an advantage (the visiting team has a disadvantage) due to three factors:the visiting team suffers from travel fatigue; crowd intimidation by the home team fans; lack of familiarity with the playing conditions

摘要:
The paper presents modified tables derived from the work of Romboski and Soundararajan & Arumainayagam for the selection of quick switching systems of type QSS-2, QSS-3 and QSS-4 for given values of acceptable quality level, limiting quality level, producer's risk and consumer's risk. The plans selected from the tables will involve a smaller average sample number at the acceptable quality level.

摘要:
A new moment estimator of the dispersion parameter of the beta-binomial distribution is proposed. It is derived by the method of moments which is constrained to satisfy the unbiasedness of the estimating equation. It gives a better performance than those of the usual moment estimators and the stabilized moment estimator proposed by Tamura & Young. The bias of the estimator is smaller than that of the maximum likelihood estimate in a wide range of parameter space.
