摘要:
This paper describes combined maximum likelihood estimation of treatment effects and variance components in a linear mixed model. Estimates are obtained by a simple modification of iterative weighted least squares. The method is illustrated using plating efficiencies of Solanum and Lycopersicon species.

摘要:
The Shewhart p-chart or np-chart is commonly used for monitoring the counts of non-conforming items which are usually well modelled by a binomial distribution with parameters n and p where n is the number of items inspected each time and p is the process fraction of non-conforming items produced. It is well known that the Shewhart chart is not sensitive to small shifts in p. The cumulative sum (CUSUM) chart is a far more powerful charting procedure for detecting small shifts in p and only marginally less powerful in detecting large shifts in p. The choice of chart parameters of a Shewhart chart is well documented in the quality control literature. On the other hand, very little has been done for the more powerful CUSUM chart, possibly due to the fact that the run length distribution of a CUSUM chart is much harder to compute. An optimal design strategy is given here which allows the chart parameters of an optimal CUSUM chart to be determined easily. Optimal choice of n and the relationship between the CUSUM chart and the sequential probability ratio test are also investigated.

摘要:
Log-linear models are used extensively in the analysis of cross-tabulated data. Starting with the saturated model, which describes all the complex interrelationships in a multidimensional table and then testing for the significance of higher-order interactions, the simplest model providing a satisfactory explanation of the data can be arrived at. This approach was adopted to identify any discernible quantitative pattern in the data on the average number of fledgelings per nest of osprey in the northeast US for 1969–83. These models are then used to obtain an index of marine ecosystem degradation.

摘要:
This paper presents procedures and tables for the selection of conditional sampling plans, viz. conditional double sampling plan, chain-deferred sampling plan, link sampling plan, and ChSP-4A chain sampling plan for given acceptable quality level (AQL), producer's risk, limiting quality level and consumer's risk giving minimum sample size at AQL under the conditions of the Poisson model for the operating characteristic curve.

摘要:
Household Expenditure Survey (HES) data are widely reported in grouped form for a number of reasons. Only within-group arithmetic means (AMs) of the household expenditures on various consumption items, total expenditure, income . and other variables are reported in the tabular form. However, the use of such within-group AMs introduces biases when the parameters of various commonly used non-linear Engel functions are estimated by the Aitken's generalized least squares (GLS) method. This is because the within-group geometric means (GMs)/harmonic means (HMs) are needed in order to estimate unbiased parameters of those non-linear Engel functions. Kakwani (1977) estimated the within-group GMs/HMs from the Kakwani-Podder (1976) Lorenz curve for Indonesian data. We have extended his method to estimate within-group GMs/HMs to a set of variables, based on a general type of concentration curve. It is shown that our estimated within-group GMs/HMs based on concentration curves are not entirely suitable for the Australian HES data. However, these GMs/HMs are then used to estimate Engel parameters for various non-linear Engel functions and it is seen that these elasticities are different for some items of certain non-linear Engel functions than those when the reported within-group AMs are used as proxies for within-group GMs/HMs in order to estimate those non-linear Engel functions. The concept of the average elasticity of a variable elasticity Engel function is discussed and computed for various Australian household consumption items. It is empirically demonstrated that the average elasticities are more meaningful than the traditional elasticity estimates computed at some representative values for certain functions.
