In manufacturing industry, there is growing interest in quantitative measures of process variation under multivariate setting. This paper introduces a multivariate capability index and focuses its applications in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. This index incorporates both the process variation and the process deviation from target. Two existing multivariate indices are compared with the proposed index.

In this paper, we derive the probabilities that four chosen sampling schemes will detect a circular patch of organisms whose location is at some random location in the study area. We also describe simulations which indicate the variation of patch detection probabilities for different realizations of the sampling design. We comment briefly on how probabilities would be affected by multiple and different shaped patches. Our results are a useful guide for practitioners when choosing a design and an appropriate sampling intensity.

In this paper, an alternative model is examined for the distribution arising out of ascertainment. The weighted beta-binomial is suggested for this purpose as it incorporates the variability in the parameter ø of the weighted binomial distribution. The latter distribution has been the model considered by Rao (1965, 1985) and Kocherlakota and Kocherlakota (1990). Techniques for separate families introduced in Kocherlakota and Kocherlakota (1986) are applied to demonstrate that the weighted beta-binomial model is more appropriate in this situation.

Two types of decision errors can be made when using a quality control chart for non-conforming units (p-chart). A Type I error occurs when the process is not out of control but a search for an assignable cause is performed unnecessarily. A Type II error occurs when the process is out of control but a search for an assignable cause is not performed. The probability of a Type I error is under direct control of the decision-maker while the probability of a Type II error depends, in part, on the sample size. A simple sample size formula is presented for determining the required sample size for a p-chart with specified probabilities of Type I and Type II errors.

The large sample theory of spherical regression with fixed explanatory variables (Chang, 1986) is modified for the case of axes, unsigned directional data. Thus, for the case in which u1, . . ., un are fixed points on the sphere with antipodes identified, and v1, . . ., vn are random points such that the distribution of vi depends only on (viT Aui)2 for some unknown rotation matrix A, this paper provides asymptotic tests and confidence regions for A, and for the axis of rotation of A. Results are given in arbitrary dimension.

We describe a test statistic for a changepoint in a sequence of repeated measurements. This statistic is non-parametric, and may be motivated from either frequentist or Bayesian considerations. We apply this procedure to data arising from a clinical sleep study of low-energy emission therapy.

The delta-corrected Kolmogorov-Smirnov test has been shown to be uniformly more powerful than the classical Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The power of the delta-corrected Kolmogorov-Smimov test is compared to six other goodness of fit tests based on the empirical distribution function using 10 000 Monte Carlo samples. Also, how the delta-corrected Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is conducted is illustrated.
